Managing Symptoms of Ifluenza-Like-Illness
Geneseo is now experiencing a large number of students with Influenza-Like Illness (ILI). In order to manage the medical and academic needs of ill students, it is extremely important that you understand the following instructions:
- Please do not come to Health Services if you suspect that you have ILI and are not severely ill. Call us first. We can provide you instructions for symptomatic care over the phone. A friend or roommate can come to our Self-Care Center for over the counter medications.
- We recommend that you go home to recover with your family.
- For students who do need to be seen by our medical staff, we are scheduling to see all students with ILI between the hours of 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. We are asking students with ILI symptoms to please put on a mask when entering the Lauderdale building (available to the left of the entrance).
- If you have ILI and live in the residence halls, please tell your RA/RD. Stay away from others. If you are ill, your roommate may chose to move to another room to avoid the virus. Your RD can assist with this.
- Do not go to class. Email your professors to tell them you are ill. Staff can help you contact the Dean of Students to assist with notifying your professors.
- Get plenty of rest. Even if you do not feel like eating, please remember to drink fluids so you do not become dehydrated.
- If you experience shortness of breath or other severe symptoms, please call Health Services (245-5736) for an appointment or University Police (245-5222) for immediate assistance.
- On the evenings and weekends when Health Services is closed, remember that we have an on-call Nurse Advice Line to assist with answering your questions; simply call the Health Services number (245-5736) when our office is closed, and your call will be automatically forwarded to a registered nurse.
Now more than ever, it is important to take care of yourself and prevent the spread of the virus. As always, please contact Student Health and Counseling at 245-5736 with your concerns.
We will be scheduling an H1N1 flu vaccination clinic soon. Please continue to check this page for further updates. It is important that we keep an accurate count of our students with Influenza-Like-Illnesses, so please keep us informed!
Additional Information
SUNY Geneseo has a dedicated team of professionals who have been working closely together for several years to establish an effective plan for handling a pandemic flu outbreak. This team has been monitoring the recommendations of the CDC, WHO, State, and local government health departments to stay current on updated information regarding the HINI virus. Geneseo will continue to take additional precautions to prevent the spread of the flu as much as possible.
The CDC has established the following recommendations to protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- Think you might be sick with something other than an ILI? Visit our Common Health Concerns page for more information.
Laudedale Center for Student Health and Counseling is proud to be participating in ACHA's Influenza Like Illnesses (ILI) Surveillance in College and Universities.
