Creating Accessible Web Pages
The Office For Technology has issued a revised Web Accessibility policy, Statewide Technology Policy P04-002, titled "Accessibility of State Agency Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications." This new policy went into effect on Monday, June 21, 2004. The policy can be viewed at http://www.oft.state.ny.us/policy/p04-002/.

Who benefits from accessible web pages?
- Users with slow Internet connections.
- Users with older or low end computers
- Users with disabilities.
- Users with bad eye sight.

What can I do to make my web site more accessible?

Alt tag

-The tag gives a short description of the contents of an image. It is the the little message that appears when you hold the mouse over an image.

Textual equivalents

-Make textual equivalents for all information portrayed in the image so those who are unable to view pictures can figure out what information your image is portraying.

Avoid Animated gifs

-If an animated .gif blinks more than a few times, users will cover up the animation or scroll it off the screen. Animated gifs may also cause difficulty for users who are sensitive to flashing lights or with epilepsy.
