Consistently ranked as one of the top public liberal arts colleges in the northeast by US News & World Report, SUNY Geneseo's intercollegiate athletics program reflects the commitment to excellence by offering a wide range of programs for both the serious and recreational athlete.
The College's intercollegiate athletics program is comprised of 20 teams, fielding teams in 12 women's sports and eight men's.Through the 2010-11 academic year, Geneseo has posted an all-time, all-sports record of 5,398 wins, 4,096 losses and 181 ties for a 56.7 winning percentage.
In 2010-11, Geneseo teams won 65.0% of their contests with 180 wins against 96 losses and four ties. The Knights won six SUNYAC championships; women's field hockey, men's swimming & diving (their 13th straight), women's swimming and diving, men's cross country, women's basketball and men's outdoor track and field on their way to finishing second in the SUNYAC Commissioner's Cup standings for overall sports performance in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). In addition, Geneseo finished 39th of over 440 Division III institutions in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics/Learfield Cup standings for overall Division III national championship performance.
Nineteen of our 20 programs earned postseason play with the men's and women's cross country teams, women's field hockey and women's basketball teams participating in the national championships as well as the men's and women's swimming and diving, indoor and outdoor track and field teams sending individual representatives to NCAA Division III competitions.
17 student-athletes earned 22 All-American awards and eight student-athletes were named SUNYAC Player of the Year; Lee Berube for men's cross country, Marissa Liberati for women's cross country , Michelle Milkovich for field hockey, Krista Frieling for volleyball, Michelle Rodriguez for women's swimming, Austin Brennan for men's swimming, Wills DeMoulin for men's diving and Alyssa Smith for women's outdoor track. In addition, Milkovich was chosen as recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and Rodriguez earned the Grace Mowatt Award for Career Achievement in SUNYAC Women's Swimming & Diving.
Geneseo student-athletes perform in the classroom as well as the playing surface. In 2010-11, 249 (53.0%) of our student-athletes were named to the SUNYAC All-Academic Team for achieving a semester grade point average of 3.3 or higher during their season of competition and 125 (26.6%) of our athletes were recognized on the Commissioner's List for maintaining a 3.3 grade point average or higher for three consecutive semesters. Eight student-athletes were selected as the SUNYAC Scholar-Athlete in 2010-11, including junior Julie Dmochowski for women's cross country, junior Ian Mort for men's soccer, senior Lee Gabler for men's cross country, junior Katie Gayvert for women's tennis, junior Bri Dunton for women's basketball, junior Danae Polsin for women's indoor track and field, junior Josh Kaplan for men's swimming and senior Carla Stephan for women's equestrian.
Finally, five of Geneseo's coaches earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year awards in 2010-11. Head coach Mike Woods captured the award for men's cross country, Jessica Seren for field hockey, Scott Hemer for women's basketball, Chris Schultz for men's ice hockey and Paul Dotterweich for men's swimming and diving.
For the recreational athlete, the college provides 23 intramural leagues in nine different sports and 11 single day tournaments, along with recreational hours in the gymnasiums, swimming pool, ice arena, and jogging track. The college also has an all-weather outdoor track, two soccer/lacrosse fields, a softball diamond, field hockey field and many intramural fields.
