Ithaca, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s track & field team
competed at Cornell’s Kane Invitational Saturday. No team scores were kept at
the primarily Division I meet.
Senior Alex Brimstein (Webster/Webster-Thomas) won the 5,000-meter run and ran
the first leg on the winning 3,200-meter relay – the only two first-place finishes
by a Division III school at the meet. Brimstein’s time of 14:47.35 in the
5,000-meter run is the 16th-fastest in the nation, the top time in State University
of New York Athletic Conference and ranks seventh on Geneseo’s all-time list.
The 3,200-meter relay team set a school record, finishing in a winning time of 7:53.37.
Junior Nate DeBoever (West Hurley/Onteora), junior Tony George (West
Seneca/West Seneca West) and senior Chris Carter (Grand Island/Grand Island)
rounded out the first-place quartet.
Two other Knights joined Brimstein as qualifiers for the Eastern College
Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships in the 5,000-meter run: senior Chris
Mateer (Webster/Webster-Thomas) finished seventh in 15:07 and sophomore Cohen
Miles-Rauth (Cohocton/Wayland-Cohocton) was 11th in 15:11.
Sophomore Luke Taverne (Vernon/Westmoreland) recorded Geneseo’s top field
performance. He placed third in the high jump (first among Division III
athletes) with an ECAC Championships qualifying performance; his mark of 6-4 (1.94
meters) is the program’s seventh-best performance ever and ranks second in the
SUNYAC this season.
Senior Brendan Murphy (Katonah/Iona Prep) placed ninth in the weight throw
(47-11 3/4; 14.62 meters) and 11th in the shot put with an effort of 42-3 1/4
(12.88 meters).
