GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s swimming &
diving team (1-1) suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 162-132
decision to visiting Cortland (1-1).
The Blue Knights recorded seven first-place finishes, with first year Kristian
Tialios (Mount Tremper/Onteora) contributing four of them. Tialios won the
100-yard backstroke (55.69), 200-yard backstroke (1:59.09) and 200-yard individual
medley (2:04.30). He also swam on the winning 400-yard medley relay team, which
posted a first-place time of 3:39.28.
Senior Frank Schiappa (East Amherst/Canisius) and first-year Yoonghong
Jun (Nanuet/Tappan Zee) both swam on that winning relay and posted
individual wins as well. Schiappa took first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.04)
and Jun was the winner in the 100-yard butterfly (53.08). First year Justin
Ongkingco (Watertown/Watertown) joined Tialios, Jun and Schiappa
on the 400 medley relay team. Sophomore Kenny Athans (Victor/Victor)
rounded out Geneseo’s winners, placing first in the 200-yard breaststroke
(2:20.87).
Schiappa was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (49.33), Jun
took second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.87) and Ongkingco placed
second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.73).
Junior Brandon Peifer (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) was second in both diving
events, scoring 224.90 in the 1-meter competition and 206.20 on the 3-meter
board. Sophomore John Nasky (Rochester/Brighton) finished second in the
1,000-yard freestyle (10:13.73). Geneseo’s 400-yard freestyle relay team –
featuring Schiappa, Athans, Jun and first year Jordan
Gay (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) – placed second in 3:19.37.
Geneseo travels to Clinton next Saturday to face Hartwick, Ithaca and host
Hamilton.
