The SUNY Geneseo cross country team has been an intercollegiate sport since the 1967. Head coach Mike Woods is a 1969 graduate of Geneseo and is in his 18th season. The men's program was started by coach Dunc Hinckley and in 1980, the women's program was started under the direction of coach Rich Ceronie.
The women's cross country team highlighted their 2009 season with a ninth place finish in their 11th straight and 15th overall appearance at the NCAA Division III meet for 18th year head coach Mike Woods, '69. Geneseo finished second in the Atlantic Region after winning their 10th consecutive SUNYAC title. Senior Sandra Goettelman earned All-American recognition with an 18th place finish at the national meet after finishing fourth in the Atlantic Region, winning the SUNYAC Individual title and being inducted into the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. First year Brigid Heenan earned All-Atlantic Region and first team All-SUNYAC, while classmate Marissa Liberati and graduate students Liz Montgomery and Maggie Morris garnered All-Atlantic Region and second team All-SUNYAC. Sophomore Alyssa Smith and first year Emily Sullivan joined the quartet at the NCAA championships after grabbing second team All-SUNYAC honors with senior Erin Marks. Woods notched his eighth straight and ninth overall SUNYAC Coach of the Year award, while Montgomery claimed the SUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Award given to the member of the All-SUNYAC team with the highest grade point average.
The men's cross country team highlighted their 2009 season by finishing a program-best sixth of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III championships for 18th year head coach Mike Woods, '69. On the way to their sixth straight appearance at the nationals, Geneseo placed second at the NCAA Atlantic Regional and won their ninth SUNYAC championship. Sophomore Lee Berube led Geneseo by winning the SUNYAC Individual title and garnering first team All-SUNYAC, SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame and All-Atlantic Region honors. Seniors Tim Chichester and Bobby Henchen claimed first team All-SUNYAC and SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame recognition by finishing third and fifth, respectively, in the conference meet, with the former earning All-Atlantic Region and the latter finishing a team-best 39th at the NCAA. Senior Jesse Berube, junior Ryan O'Connor and sophomore Nick Pardee appeared on the All-Atlantic Region and All-SUNYAC second team, while sophomore Chris Mateer joined the group at the NCAA championships. The SUNYAC named Woods its Coach of the Year for the seventh time.
