Cross country has been an intercollegiate sport at Geneseo since 1967. Head coach Mike Woods is a 1969 graduate of Geneseo and completed his 22nd season at Geneseo in 2012. The men's program was started by coach Dunc Hinckley and in 1980, the women's program was started under the direction of coach Rich Ceronie.

The 2012 women’s cross country team made the program’s 14 consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships and 19th trip overall. The Knights, who placed 26th at the NCAA meet, earned their trip to nationals with a second-place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. Sophomore Cassie Goodman was the Knights’ top finisher at nationals and earned all-region and all-SUNYAC honors after placing 20th at regionals and fourth at the conference meet. Senior Cailin Kowalewski finished a team-best 16th at the regional championships to earn all-region honors; she also received second-team all-SUNYAC recognition after placing 11th. Junior Mary Aldridge also earned all-region and all-SUNYAC honors after finishing 31st and 15th, respectively. Four other Knights picked up all-SUNYAC accolades: first year Ashton Hughes (eighth place), senior Brigid Heenan (10th place), junior Rebekah Steinke (12th place) and sophomore Alyssa Knott (14th place). During the regular season, the Knights recorded top-five finishes at four of their five meets, including a first-place effort at the Geneseo Invitational. Mike Woods was named SUNYAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the 11th time.

The men’s cross country team placed 17th at the NCAA Championships behind a stellar season by senior Alex Brimstein. Brimstein, who was named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year, earned all-America honors with a 10th-place finish at nationals. The NCAA berth was Geneseo’s 10th straight and marked the Knights’ ninth top-20 finish. The team took second at the NCAA regional championships and won the SUNYAC title for the fourth year in a row. Brimstein, the program’s 13th all-American, turned in the sixth top-10 finish by a Geneseo runner. He won the individual titles at both the NCAA Atlantic Regional and SUNYAC championships. He was one of five Knights on the all-region team. Seniors Chris Mateer and Tom Clark placed seventh and eighth, respectively, at regionals; senior Chris Moore took 19th and sophomore Ryan Moynihan finished 24th. Brimstein, Mateer, Clark and Moynihan all earned first-team all-SUNYAC recognition after placing second, third and fifth, respectively at the conference meet. Senior Tim Chambers (ninth place), junior Patrick Wortner (13th place), first year Brendan Wortner (14th place) and junior Chris Moore (15th place) all picked up second-team all-SUNYAC honors. Brimstein, Mateer and Moynihan joined Clark (a 2011 inductee) in the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. The Knights won two other team titles during the season, placing first at the Geneseo Invitational and Oberlin’s Inter-Regional Rumble. For the 10th time in his career, veteran coach Mike Woods was named SUNYAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
