The host Potsdam Bears scored five consecutive goals in the second period, three on the same five-minute power play, in skating to a 7-3 win over the Geneseo men's ice hockey team tonight. Potsdam took a 2-0 lead after one period as they scored twice in the initial four minutes of the game. In the second period, Geneseo tied the score on goals by Brandon Angotti, from Carson Schell and Ryan Bulach, and Blake O'Connor, from Colin de Jersey and Kaz Iwamoto, the first of the season for each. Potsdam scored less than a minute after O'Connor tied the game and then posted the power play barrage to lead 6-2. After another Bear goal, Iwamoto scored his first of the season from first year Justin Scharfe for the 7-3 score and neither team could find the scoring touch in the third period. Senior Cory Gershon made 19 saves and allowed six goals in 37:12, junior Adrian Rubeniuk allowed one goal in 38 seconds and first year Bryan Haude made five saves in 22:10. Geneseo falls to 4-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in SUNYAC.
The St. Joseph's College Golden Eagles of Long Island used a 16-1 run in the final stages of the game and went on to defeat the Geneseo men's basketball team by a score of 81-72 in the first round of the Eastern Connecticut tournament tonight. Geneseo led 38-37 at the half and maintained a 66-65 lead with 4:41 remaining when the Golden Eagles pulled away with seven points in a row as part of the final run. St. Joseph's hit 10-37 from the arc and 21-28 from the free throw line, while Geneseo was 4-19 from long range and 10-20 from the charity stripe. The Blue Knights controlled the glass with a 59-34 margin, but committed 20 turnovers to just 11 for the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Jordan Jones went 8-19 from the floor on his way to 19 points and first year James McKenna added 15 points on 6-9 from the field, 2-5 from the arc and 1-2 from the line with seven rebounds. Junior Ryan Riefenhauser was 5-11 from the field on his way to 13 points and a game-high 12 boards. The Blue Knights fall to 0-2 on the season and take on Worcester St. in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
