Potsdam, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s basketball team (16-5. 12-3 SUNYAC) turned in its best defensive effort of the season, holding host Potsdam (1-20, 0-14 SUNYAC) to 12 second-half points in a 74-33 win in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday. With the win, the Knights move to within a game of clinching a first-round bye in the six-team conference playoffs; Geneseo can secure a top-two seed for the SUNYAC tournament with a win Saturday at Plattsburgh.

The Bears’ totals of 33 points and 24.6 field-goal percentage were both season-lows for Knight opponents. The balanced Geneseo offense was led by sophomore forward Shannon McGinnis (Walworth/Gananda), who made seven of her eight shots from the floor en route to a game-high 17 points.

Senior guard Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mount Mercy) recorded her third double-double of the season, collecting 12 points and 11 rebounds. She added six assists and three of Geneseo’s eight blocked shots. Graham raised her career total to 675 rebounds, moving into fourth on the program’s all-time list.

First year forward Allison McKenna (Huntingdon/John Glenn) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. McGinnis contributed eight rebounds and three assists.

Senior forward Nyisha Lewis (Rochester/Mercy) and first year guard Amelia Heiselman (Central Square/Bishop Grimes) scored career-best totals of eight and five points, respectively. First year guard Dana Cohan (Rochester/Greece Athena) added eight points and three assists.

Geneseo pulled away early, using a 17-6 run to turn an 11-7 lead into a 28-13 advantage. Potsdam never came within 10 points again and the Bears were held scoreless for the first 10:06 of the second period as Geneseo’s 18-0 start sealed the win.

The Knights, who lead the nation in rebounding margin, outrebounded the Bears 44-23.

The Knights close out their weekend road trip with a 2 p.m. game at Plattsburgh Saturday.
