Shenandoah, Texas – Geneseo swimmers have advanced to the
finals in two events during Thursday’s competition on the second day of the
NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Sophomore Abby Max (New Hartford/New Hartford) placed 16th in the preliminaries
of the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:51.72 to qualify for the evening
session’s consolation final. She’s making her second straight appearance at
nationals in the event after placing 20th a year ago.
Max also anchored Geneseo’s 400-yard medley relay team, which earned a berth in
the consolation final by finishing 13th. The team of sophomore Haleigh Wixson
(Montour Falls/Watkins Glen), junior Kaitlin Wilcoxen
(Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), junior Lily Powell (Selkirk/Bethlehem) and Max posted a time of in 3:53.14.
The Knights also competed in the 200-yard freestyle relay during Thursday
morning’s preliminary session. The quartet of Wixson, Wilcoxen, senior Elyssa
Max (New Hartford/New Hartford) and Abby Max placed 17th in 1:37.12 – missing a
spot in the finals by .71 seconds, Geneseo had been seeded 28th in the field.
Abby Max and the 200-yard medley relay team – sophomore Molly Carney (Chenango
Forks/Chenango Forks), senior Eileen Goralski (Queensbury/Queensbury), Abby Max
and Wixson – both posted all-America finishes Wednesday. Abby Max took 15th in
the 500-yard freestyle and the 200 medley team finished 15th.
The top 16 finishers in each individual and relay event earn all-America
honors.
The Knights are 25th in the team standings after the first of four days of
competition.
Eight Knights are competing in a total of 13 events at the
NCAA Championships, which continue Friday before concluding Saturday.
