Buffalo, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s swimming & diving
team wrapped up the second of three days of competition at the State University
of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships extending their lead to
113 points. The Knights, who have won five consecutive SUNYAC titles, have
scored 516 points through 13 events, leading second-place Cortland’s 403 points.
The Knights won three events Friday, and posted three NCAA qualifying
performances.
Sophomore Abby Max (New Hartford/New Hartford) led the way, winning the
200-yard freestyle and anchoring the 800-yard freestyle relay – recording NCAA “B”
cuts in both events. In the 200 free, Max won her second straight SUNYAC title,
winning in 1:51.54 (missing the meet record by .02 seconds).
Two other Knights scored in the 200 free. Senior Elyssa Max (New Hartford/New
Hartford) was sixth in 1:56.67 and junior Corrine Vairo (Poquott/Ward Melville)
placed ninth in 1:56.98.
In the 800 freestyle relay, Geneseo claimed the conference title for the fourth
time in five years. The quartet of sophomore Haleigh Wixson (Montour Falls/Watkins Glen), Vairo, Elyssa Max and Abby Max won in a meet-record time of 7:37.97 for an NCAA
“B” cut time.
Wixson posted Geneseo’s other NCAA qualifying effort, placing second in the
100-yard backstroke in a school-record time of 57.10. She was joined in the final by junior Lauren
Boyce (New Hartford/New Hartford), who finished seventh in 1:00.33. First year Betsy Erickson (Elma/Iroquois) raced in the consolation final,
placing 10th in 1:01.41.
The 100-yard breaststroke final featured three Geneseo swimmers, led by senior Kaitlin
Wilcoxen (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), who won the conference title in
a school-record 1:06.32. Sophomore Eileen Goralski (Queensbury/Queensbury) finished in a
runner-up time of 1:06.38 and sophomore Katherine Jesaitis (Clifton
Park/Shenendehowa) was eighth in 1:09.39.
Half the field in the finals in the 100-yard butterfly were Knights. Junior Lily
Powell (Selkirk/Bethlehem) was third in 58.70, first year Hailey Modelewski (Northport/Northport)
finished fourth in 58.81, junior Molly Carney (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) placed
fifth in 58.93 and sophomore Kristen Bormann (Farmingdale/Half Hollow Hills
East) took eighth in 1:00.37.
First year Jenna Gibbons (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech) placed fifth in the
400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:43.49.
The 200-yard medley relay team rounded out Geneseo’s second-day scorers. Boyce,
Wilcoxen, Carney and Elyssa Max finished in 1:48.21.
Competition concludes Saturday at the SUNYAC Championships.
