The SUNY Geneseo men's basketball team has been an intercollegiate sport since the winter of 1915. Head coach Steve Minton is a 1986 graduate of Heidelberg College has a record of 144-97 in nine seasons. The program was started by John O'Neill and has compiled a record of 820-834-1 in its 90 seasons.
In 2008-09, the men's basketball team finished the season with a 17-9 record. The Knights finished the conference season with a record of 11-5 and were upset in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament by Brockport. Senior Scott Morton began what would turn out to be a storybook season with an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter and completed it by earning NABC second team All-American, first team All-East Region, SUNYAC Player of the Year and first team All-SUNYAC, along with being named one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Division III Player of the Year award. Morton led the Knights in points with 20.3 per game, rebounds (7.1), assists (4.5), steals (2.0) and blocks (1.2). He finished his career third all-time in scoring with 1,513 points, second in assists (447), third in blocks (136) and fourth in steals (194). Senior Jeff Howe garnered honorable mention All-SUNYAC after scoring 12.9 points per game, grabbing 6.3 rebounds and shooting a team-best 56.4% from the field. Howe completed his career 20th on the scoring chart with 1,020 points and 14th in rebounds (543). Junior Brandon Simpson added 10.2 points per game, shot .550 from the field and collected 5.5 rebounds, while classmate Kyle Stevens contributed 9.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and a team-best .430 from the arc (46-107). First year Mike Hoy netted 5.8 points per game, including smashing his career-high with 25 points in the final game of the season.
