Rochester,
N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s cross country team clinched its 10th straight trip to
the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at Saturday’s NCAA Atlantic Regional.
Senior Alex Brimstein (Webster/Thomas)
led the Blue Knights, winning the individual title at the 297-runner field.
Geneseo, ranked fourth nationally, took second of 44 teams to earn a berth at
next Saturday’s NCAA Cross Country Championships, held at LaVern Gibson Course
in Terre Haute, Ind.
Brimstein is Geneseo’s second
consecutive regional champion; a Blue Knight has placed first at the regional
meet five times in the past 12 years. Brimstein
finished the 8,000-meter course in 25:14.4, edging out the runner-up by 1.8
seconds.
Five other Blue Knights earned all-region honors by virtue of a top-35 finish. Seniors Chris Mateer (Webster/Thomas)
and Tom Clark (Wantagh/Wantagh) joined
Brimstein in the top 10, placing
seventh and eighth with respective times of 25:36.7 and 25:37.8. Senior Chris Moore (Syracuse/Westhill) placed
19th in 26:01.1 and sophomore Ryan
Moynihan (Geneseo/Geneseo) took 24th in 26:05.1, giving the Blue Knights a
team score of 59 points. Senior Tim Chambers (Baldwinsville/C.W.
Baker) finished 27th in 26:09.0. Junior Patrick Wortner (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) was 48th in 26:30.4.
The Blue Knights have posted six top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, topped
by last fall’s fourth-place showing.
