Rochester, N.Y. -- The Geneseo men's lacrosse team (2-1) won its second game in a row, beating #22 Nazareth 10-9 Saturday. The Knights scored the game -winning goal with just 2:15 left in regulation.

Sophomore attack Sam Thompson (Queensbury/Queensbury) scored the game-winner – his second goal of the game – with 135 seconds left and Geneseo held off the Nazareth, who won the ensuing faceoff. The Golden Flyers had a chance to tie the game but their shot was saved by junior Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore/Army Prep) with 1:25 to go. The Golden Flyers regained possession with 23 seconds left; senior midfielder Jeff Dunworth (Katonah/John Jay) caused a Nazareth turnover and Geneseo regained possession and ran out the clock.

The Knights opened up an 8-5 lead in the third quarter before Nazareth rallied with three goals in the last 98 seconds of the period. The Golden Flyers scored their fourth straight goal 3:27 into the fourth quarter to retake the lead.

Geneseo’s defense held Nazareth off the board – the Golden Flyers had nine shots over the final 11:33 – and senior midfielder Tim Burgess (Syracuse/Westhill) scored the tying goal with 6:32 to go. Burgess (who also scored the tying goal late in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s 11-9 win at Lycoming) knotted the score, converting a feed from sophomore attack Steven Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) just as the Golden Flyers returned a player from the penalty box.

Cregan finished with a career-high eight points, notching his second career four-goal game and his fifth four-assist performance. Cregan now has 11 points this season and 59 in his 17-game career.

Cregan assisted on Geneseo’s first two goals after the host Golden Flyers had taken a 2-0 lead into the second quarter.  Sophomore attack Andre Keating (Ithaca/Ithaca) and Thompson scored off Cregan assists, then first year attack Drew Huntington (Penfield/Penfield) notched an unassisted goal and Cregan’s first goal of the game – 1:55 into the second half – pulled the Knights even at four-all. Senior midfielder Chris Topping (Webster/Schroeder) assisted on the goal.

Cregan followed with an unassisted goal 1:26 later to kick off a 4-1 run for Geneseo. He assisted on Keating’s second goal of the game and added his third and fourth goals of the game to cap the Knights’ six-goal third quarter.

Keating, who now has six points on the season, picked up a career-best four ground balls. Burgess also recorded four ground balls with Cregan, Dunworth, Topping and sophomore defenseman Dom Infanzon (Port Jefferson/Comsewogue) adding three apiece.

Zaremba earned the win, making six saves and picking up three ground balls while playing the third quarter. Senior Michael Greubel (North Merrick/Mepham) played the first half, finishing with seven saves and a team-leading five ground balls.

Dunworth finished with four caused turnovers, giving him a total of 12 through three games this spring.

Geneseo is idle until Saturday, March 16, when the Knights play at #30 Clarkson.
