Buffalo, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s swimming & diving team
placed second at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)
Championships. The Knights concluded the three-day meet with 726 points,
trailing only first-place Cortland’s total of 795. In Saturday’s competition,
Geneseo posted four NCAA qualifying performances and won three events.
Senior Frank Schiappa (East Amherst/Canisius) and sophomore John Nasky
(Rochester/Brighton) both defended individual SUNYAC titles with school records and NCAA “B” cut efforts.
Schiappa repeated as 100-yard freestyle champion, winning in 45.57. First year Tyler
Roth (Fredonia/St. Francis) reached the consolation finals, placing 13th in
48.45.
Nasky won the 1,650-yard freestyle for the second year in a row; his meet
record time was 16:02.50.Sophomore Don McLoughlin (Waccabuc/John Jay) finished
fifth in 16:38.50. First year Ben Greenspan (Williamsville/Williamsville South)
finished ninth in 16:53.93.
First year Yonghoon Jun (Nanuet/Tappan Zee) posted an NCAA “B” cut in the
200-yard butterfly. His winning time of 1:53.10 set a Geneseo, conference and meet
record.
Sophomore Bryan Schaub (Blauvelt/Tappan Zee) finished sixth in 1:57.98 with sophomore
Kenny Athans (Victor/Victor) eighth in 2:01.70. First year Andy Schunk (Ardsley/Ardsley)
was 13th, finishing in 2:01.29.
First year Kristian Tialios (Mount Tremper/Onteora) rounded out Geneseo’s NCAA
qualifiers, recording a school-record time of 1:52.90 in the 200-yard backstroke. Tialios
placed third in the event, with first year Brian Yale (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) and sophomore Branden Dahlem
(Rhinebeck/Our Lady of Lourdes) sixth and seventh with respective times of
1:55.37 and 1:56.67. Senior Austin Brennan (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) finished
ninth in 1:56.99.
Junior Brandon Peifer (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) took third in the 3-meter diving
with a score of 471.30.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, four Knights scored points. Senior Greg Marks (Phelps/Midlakes) was sixth in the final (2:12.14) with
junior Paul Jennings (East Northport/Elwood-John Glenn) eighth in 2:14.99.
First year Jordan Gay (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) and first year Justin
Ongkingco (Watertown/Watertown) were 11th and 12th, finishing in 2:15.30 and
2:15.36, respectively.
The Knights took second in the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle
relay. The team of Schiappa, Brennan, Roth and Jun finished in 3:07.63.
