The SUNY Geneseo men's lacrosse team has been an intercollegiate sport since the 1968. Head coach Jim Lyons is a 1988 graduate of Drew University and has a 96-39 record in nine seasons. The program was started by John Hoey and has compiled a record of 287-247 in its 42 seasons.
In 2009, the team posted a 13-2 record and were ranked 13th in the final USILA Division III Coaches Poll. Geneseo went 7-0 in the SUNYAC regular season to earn the number one seed for the conference tournament, where the Knights defeated Plattsburgh in the semifinals before falling to second seed and #7 nationally-ranked Cortland in the title game, 14-13. Geneseo's attack trio became the first in school history to score over 60 points apiece as senior honorable mention All-American and first team All-SUNYAC Tom Costanza led the way with 42 goals and 25 assists for 67 points, senior honorable mention All-SUNYAC Mike Cintineo scored a school-record 53 goals with 12 assists for 65 points and sophomore first team All-SUNYAC Craig Lange netted 27 goals and 37 assists for 64 points. Senior Jim Fiacco added 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points to lead the midfield contingent, while junior Ray Ryan added 9-15-24 and SUNYAC All-Tournament picks Dylan Bittlingmaier and Justin Rand collected 19-3-22 and 12-9-21, respectively as the former earned second team All-SUNYAC. Junior Erik Baranowski won 60.7% (224-369) of his face-offs this season and topped the team with 128 groundballs for first team All-SUNYAC recognition, while honorable mention All-American, All-SUNYAC first team and SUNYAC All-Tournament defender Joe May capped his sophomore campaign with 31 groundballs and a team-high 27 caused turnovers and senior defender Kyle Byron capped his career with honorable mention All-SUNYAC honors. Junior Dennis Costanza played 768 of 900 minutes in goal, posting a stellar 7.11 goals against average and a .603 save percentage, which led to honorable mention All-American and first team All-SUNYAC. |
