New Paltz, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s basketball team (6-2, 2-1
SUNYAC) forced overtime with 15 seconds left before the undefeated New Paltz
Hawks (8-0, 4-0 SUNYAC) emerged with a 73-69 victory Saturday.
Sophomore forward Shannon McGinnis (Walworth/Gananda) tied the game with a
lay-up with 15 second remaining in regulation; both teams turned the ball over
before being able to get off an attempt at a game-winning shot. In overtime, New
Paltz scored six straight points to take a 68-62 lead into the final minute. McGinnis
responded with a lay-up and a pair of free throws just two seconds apart to
pull the Blue Knights to within two points; the host Hawks converted their last
four free-throw attempts to seal their win.
McGinnis scored 14 points and added seven rebounds and four steals (one short
of her career high). Sophomore guard Cara Manfredi (South
Glastonbury/Conn./South Glastonbury) added 14 points and a personal-best seven
rebounds off the bench.
Senior guard Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mount Mercy) pulled down a game-high
13 rebounds as the Blue Knights dominated New Paltz on the boards, maintaining
a 54-39 advantage. She finished with nine points, four assists and three
steals. Sophomore forward Katie Peterson (Ithaca/Ithaca) added 11 points off
the bench. First year forward Allison McKenna (Huntington/John Glenn) contributed
eight points, eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Geneseo is idle until playing a non-league game at Misericordia Friday, Jan. 4.
