Geneseo, N.Y.-The SUNY Geneseo department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation inducted four new members into its Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 26, 2009 in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom as part of the college's Homecoming festivities.

The 2009 class included women’s tennis player Gena Tallarini Batchelder ’02, men’s soccer standout George O’Brien ‘87, women’s softball star Jill Almansberger Edwards ‘02 and women’s lacrosse midfielder, Jennifer Turkovich Lorenz ‘01.

Batchelder becomes the first women’s tennis player to grace the SUNY Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame. The two-time SUNYAC singles champion and 1998 SUNYAC second doubles champion led Geneseo to a record of 34-14 and two SUNYAC team titles during her four seasons. After winning the SUNYAC fourth singles title in 1998, the Rye, New York product played first singles for three seasons, culminating her career as the SUNYAC first singles champion in 2001. She posted a four-year record of 89-30, including a 48-10 singles mark and a 41-20 doubles record. She received her master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and appreciates the many opportunities she has had to live, teach and travel all over the country with her husband, Mike, an active duty member of the United States Coast Guard. Now living in Staten Island, the former learning specialist is now a stay-at-home parent with her six-month old son, Mikey.

O’Brien is a two-time All-SUNYAC performer as a striker in men’s soccer. His 36 career goals remain third all-time at Geneseo behind only Hall of Famer Rick Butterworth, who had 44, and Hall of Famer Ed Usinger’s 39. His 83 points is fourth all-time at Geneseo behind only Butterworth’s 114, Hall of Famer Jim Clar’s 91 and Usinger’s 86. Statistically, he is in very select company on the Geneseo charts. His game high of four goals came in 1984 against St. John Fisher and twice in his career he scored a goal in four consecutive games, only one off the school record. A 1987 graduate with a degree in economics, he lives in New York with his family.

Edwards helped Geneseo to a record of 124-45 in her four seasons as an outfielder for the women’s softball team. She was a two-time All-Northeast Region selection and two-time first team All-SUNYAC choice. She graduated with three school records; for games played with 168, at-bats with 513 and runs scored with 137. Her 180 hits stands second all-time to Hall of Famer Hilary Gangemi’s 211. She aided the Knights to the ECAC Northeast Division III championship in 2000 and the SUNYAC championship and NCAA Division III tournament in 2002. Following an unbelievable sophomore season in which she led the Knights with a .406 average, 56 hits, 44 runs and a .558 slugging percentage and added 10 doubles, three homers and 21 RBI with just two errors in 47 chances in the outfield, the Fairport native became Geneseo’s first ever softball All-American when she was named to the second team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In 2002, she earned the Myrtle Merritt Scholar-Athlete award for the combination of athletics and academics at Geneseo. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology and earned a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Buffalo in 2006. She currently resides in Webster with her husband, Brendan, and is the supervising pharmacist at the Pittsford Wegmans.

Lorenz was a four-year midfielder for the women’s lacrosse team and similar to Batchelder, becomes the first player to represent her sport in the Geneseo Sports Hall of Fame. Regarded as Geneseo’s first women’s lacrosse star, she was a two-time All-New York State selection and a three-time first team All-SUNYAC choice. Her first year at Geneseo in 1998 was just the third season of existence for the women’s lacrosse program and the team posted a dismal 4-7 record. However, with her leadership and scoring abilities, the Knights posted a 28-16 mark over her final three years, including reaching the SUNYAC championship game in 1999 and the ECAC Atlantic Region tournament in 2000. At the time of her graduation, she was the all-time leader in goals with 110 and points with 138. Despite Geneseo’s stellar record of 68-26 over the last six years under coach Carly Ritchlin, her 110 goals still stands fifth all-time at the college and the 138 points is sixth. In 2001, she earned the Myrtle Merritt Scholar-Athlete Award for the combination of athletics and academics and garnered SUNY’s most distinguished student honor, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. The 2001 graduate earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and her Juris Doctor from the University of Buffalo in 2005 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 2006. She currently resides in Lancaster with her husband Bryan, and works as an Appellate Court Attorney for the NYS Supreme Court Appellate Division, Fourth Department in Rochester.

In addition to the Hall of Fame inductions, Geneseo recognized Art Hatton, former Vice President of College Advancement and President of the Geneseo Foundation, in the "Legends of the Blue Knights" category. Hatton had a profound impact on the Geneseo athletics program with the creation of the Blue Knights Roundtable Booster club in 1978, since renamed the Roundtable Athletic Association. An avid squash player, Hatton remains an advocate, fan and supporter of the Geneseo athletic program.

The ceremony also included recognition of the 1998 and 2001 SUNYAC champion women’s tennis teams.
