GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s
basketball team (2-3) rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to take
last-minute lead before the visiting Roberts Wesleyan Red Hawks (3-3) emerged
with a 76-73 win in Friday’s consolation round of the Wendy’s College Classic.
The Blue Knights will face Rochester Institute of Technology Saturday at 1 p.m.
in the seventh/eighth-place game at Roberts Wesleyan.
A jumper by sophomore guard Gordon Lyons (Amherst/Canisius) capped a 9-2
Geneseo run and gave the Knights a 73-72 lead with 1:07 left in regulation. The
Red Hawks retook the lead on a pair of free throws with 24 seconds to play and
converted two more after forcing a Geneseo turnover. The Blue Knights’ final
possession began with 11 seconds left but they couldn’t get off an attempt at a
game-tying three-point basket.
Sophomore guard Andy Drescher (Fayetteville/Christian Brothers Academy) hit a
three-point basket to start Geneseo’s 9-2 run and junior guard Connor Fedge
(Bellport/Bellport) added lay-ups on consecutive possessions to pull the
Knights to within a point.
Fedge led Geneseo with 16 points, four assists and eight rebounds (one short of
his career high). Lyons added 15 points and junior forward Matt Curry
(Greenlawn/Harborfields) recorded his third straight double-digit scoring
effort, netting 12 points – all on three-point baskets – off the bench. Curry
also pulled down seven rebounds. Junior guard Thomas Decker (White
Plains/Archbishop Stepanic) added four assists.
