The SUNY Geneseo women's softball team has been an intercollegiate sport since the spring of 1976. Head coach Tony Ciccarello is a 1979 graduate of Brockport and has a record of 192-119 in eight seasons. The program was started by Karen Drysdale and has compiled a record of 485-372 in its 34 seasons.
In 2009, the women's softball team posted a record of 19-19, placed fourth in the SUNYAC conference and were knocked out of the SUNYAC playoffs by top-seeded Cortland in the second round. The Knights finished 13-7 in SUNYAC and returned to the postseason after a one-year hiatus. Sophomore Megan Pogemiller led the Knights in hitting at .330 with two homers and 15 RBI with a .983 fielding percentage and a team-best 216 putouts at first base. Junior Katie Holm hit .325 for the Knights and topped the charts with four homers and 28 RBI. Holm tied sophomore Sam Guarrera, who hit .281, with seven doubles, while senior Kerry Kuhn hit .306 on the year with four doubles, two homers and 17 RBI at the plate and a 9-10 record on the mound. At the top of the line-up, senior centerfielder Nickie Steger led the team in runs scored (27), walks (22) and stolen bases (7) and first year shortstop KK Schaus hit .294 with 24 runs and 14 RBI. Sophomore Janine Montera posted a 9-9 record on the mound with a 2.20 ERA and 93 strikeouts on her way to All-SUNYAC and NFCA second team All-Northeast region recognition. Kuhn finished third on the career strikeout chart with 290, while Steger finished fourth in triples with eight. |
