SUNY Geneseo women's softball team begins the 2011 season coming off a 25-17 campaign under 10th year head coach Tony Ciccarello (Brockport '79). The Knights return a core group of starters, but are looking for some strong play from some of the first years. Coach Ciccarello sees the depth of his 2011 team as possibly the best he has ever had in his tenure at Geneseo.
Hurler Janine Montera (Deer Park/Our Lady of Mercy Acad.) returns for her senior year after receiving third team All-Northeast Region recognition and first team All-SUNYAC after posting a 12-8 mark with 1.70 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 140 innings in the circle. Geneseo has depth at the pitching position this season as junior Mary Bostwick (Depew/Oakfield-Alabama) and sophomores Katie Gallagher (Gansevoort/Schuylerville) and Alexa Salzman (East Meadow) return for the Knights. First year Patricia Callahan (Franklin Square/H. Frank Carey) can pitch or play in the outfield. Bostwick finished last season with a .333 batting average, a 12-7 record and 2.71 ERA in 20 appearances.
In the infield, junior KK Schaus (Williamsville/Williamsville South) anchors the group at shortstop. Schaus finished her sophomore year with a .367 batting average, 20 runs, 11 doubles, three homers, 17 RBI and eight stolen bases. Junior Jess Steubing (Fairport) returns to third base after hitting .313 with 16 RBI in 2010 and sophomore St. John Fisher transfer Janeanne LePage (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) begins the year at second base. Junior Amy Levermore (Fairport) and first year player Elise Porreca (Lancaster) provide depth.
First baseman Megan Pogemiller (New Paltz) returns for her senior year fresh off a .985 fielding percentage, 10 doubles, one homer and 19 RBI. Sophomore designated player Stefanie Rosenberg (East Northport/Commack) returns after hitting .322 with 13 RBI on her way to first team All-SUNYAC and second team All-ECAC Upstate recognition.
Junior Kelsey Ogden (Latham/Shaker) will be starting for the Knights in the outfield with a .909 fielding percentage and shares duties with sophomore Lexi Williams (Waterford/Schenendehowa) and first year Rebecca Fitzgerald (Schenectady/Guilderland).
The catcher position will be filled with talent this season. First year Samantha Trapasso (Garden City) gets the initial nod and junior Molly Walsh (Lancaster/Mt. St. Mary Acad.) fills the backup role. Sophomore Brianna Sergio (Brewster/Kennedy) will bring leadership and experience behind the plate.
Sophomore field hockey transplant Rachel Atkins (Clarence) will see time in the outfield and at catcher and first year Kayleigh Troia (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) can play catcher or second base.
The Knights open their season with 10 games on their spring trip to Clermont, Florida and have their home opener on Saturday, April 9 versus Brockport.
