The SUNY Geneseo men's swim team has been an intercollegiate sport since the 1962-63. Head coach Paul Dotterweich is a 1997 graduate of Buffalo St. and has a 77-7 record in nine seasons. The program was started by David Carrington and has compiled a record of 382-194 in its 47 seasons.
In 2008-09, Geneseo's season was highlighted by an undefeated dual meet season (11-0) and the team's 11th consecutive SUNYAC championship and Geneseo's 16th title in the last 20 years, along with sophomore diver Wills DeMoulin qualifying for the NCAA Division III championships, where he earned honorable mention All-American with a 14th place finish on the one-meter board. At the SUNYACs, Geneseo obliterated the competition with 967 points over second place Cortland’s 609. Geneseo broke four SUNYAC and seven school records and posted 10 NCAA provisional qualifying performances for SUNYAC Coach of the Year Dotterweich. First year Ken Pink won three events as he posted a SUNYAC record in the 200-yard breaststroke, a school record in the 200-yard IM and won the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Russell Sullivan set a SUNYAC record in the 200-yard backstroke and a school record in the 100-yard backstroke, senior Sig Culhane set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle and first year Nate Foley won the 1,650-yard freestyle, an event he set a school record at the ECAC championships. Geneseo had two other winners as Colin Heinemann captured the 400-yard IM in 4:11.20 and Jamie Matthews won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.51. In relay events, the 400-medley team of Josh Kaplan, Pink, Aaron Wagner and Culhane posted a SUNYAC record, the 400-freestyle team of Dan Strothenke, Wagner, Clint Sugnet and Culhane posted a SUNYAC record and the 800-freestyle team of Culhane, Strothenke, Foley and Sugnet won that event. Senior Sugnet was the co-recipient of the James Fulton Award for career achievement in SUNYAC Swimming and Diving.
The women's swim team has been an intercollegiate sport since the 1970-71 season. Dotterweich has a record of 75-8 in eight seasons. The program was started by Eleanor Graham and has compiled a record of 348-65-2 in its 39 seasons.
In 2008-09, Dotterweich mentored the women’s swimming and diving team to an undefeated dual meet season (11-0), their second consecutive SUNYAC championship and a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving championships, the highest finish in program history. At the national meet, sophomore Michelle Rodriguez earned six All-American certificates, two first team and four honorable mention, first year Alex Dockstader grabbed five awards, including one first team and four honorable mention, sophomore Jennifer Anthone and junior Katie Linehan garnered three awards each with one each as first team, junior Sierra Achin won two honorable mention awards and senior Lindsay Dressel captured one honorable mention award. At the SUNYAC meet, Geneseo captured their 17th of the last 20 by scoring 865 points over second place Oswego’s 640. Geneseo assaulted the record books, smashing 10 SUNYAC and 17 school records and Dotterweich earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year recognition. Rodriguez, who was named Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet, set SUNYAC records in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle and a school record in the 100-yard freestyle. Dockstader set a SUNYAC record in the 200-yard IM and a school record in the 200-yard backstroke and in the 50-yard freestyle swimming lead off in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Dressel made her mark on the championships by setting SUNYAC records in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard IM, while Achin set a SUNYAC record in the 200-yard breaststroke, Alana Sprow set a school record in the 100-yard backstroke, Jessie Cocco set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke and Jade Plaschka set a school record in the 100-yard butterfly. Geneseo won all five relays and set SUNYAC records in all but the 200- yard medley, where Liz Krause, Cocco, Anthone and Rodriguez set a school record. The 400-medley team of Dockstader, Cocco, Dressel and Rodriguez finished in 3:54.03, the 200-freestyle team of Dockstader, Linehan, Cocco and Anthone finished in 1:35.79, the 400-freestyle team of Dockstader, Anthone, Linehan and Rodriguez finished in 3:29.62 and the 800-freestyle team of Anthone, Mae Lankes, Dockstader and Rodriguez finished in 7:41.42. |
