Chen

Head Coach Jim Chen

Jim Chen begins his 39th year at Geneseo and his 10th as head coach for the women's tennis team in 2011-12 and has posted a record of 92-27. In 2009-10, Chen won his second straight SUNYAC title and led the Knights to their second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III team tournament, where Geneseo fell to Wilkes (Pa.) in the first round.

Chen, who also served as captain of the Geneseo squash team and is currently rated as a 4.0 player by the USTA, completed the training program at the Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. He obtained his B.A. from Brandeis in 1962 and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1969. He came to Geneseo in 1973 as a professor in the physics department after having taught at the University of Pennsylvania.

Coach Chen recognizes that academic matters take precedence over tennis, but tennis comes before everything else. He employs a simple philosophy. "The coaching staff asks three things of its players; that they are committed to tennis, that they strive to improve and that they have fun. The winning takes care of itself."
