Sophomore Tyler Brickler scored a goal and an assist, including the eventual game-winner at 12:08 of the third period as the host Geneseo Ice Knights defeated Nazareth College in men's ice hockey, 2-1. After a scoreless first period, Geneseo got on the board with a power play goal at 14 seconds of the second when junior Rich Manley scored his first of the season on a tip in the crease with Brickler and junior Zachary Vit picking up the helpers. Brickler's goal came on the power play with Manley and sophomore Jack Caradonna getting the assists. In the waning seconds, Nazareth got their score on a scramble in front with 39 seconds to play with their netminder pulled as Mark Zavorin scored. Senior Adrian Rubeniuk got the win in goal by making 21 saves for Geneseo, while Nazareth's Joe Gladnick stopped 34 shots. The Ice Knights are 1-1-0 and travel to Fredonia on Friday.
Sophomore Rich Bellusci scored 4:59 into the second overtime on an assist by Neil Allen to lift the Geneseo men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the host Potsdam Bears (3-9-4/1-4-4 SUNYAC) this afternoon. After a scoreless first half, Geneseo took a 1-0 lead when senior Alex Stefan netted his fourth goal of the season on a direct kick at 74:58. Potsdam tied the game with only 2:42 remaining, setting the stage for Bellusci's heroics. Senior Nick Voggel made five saves in earning the win for the Blue Knights as they advance to 6-8-2 overall and 4-4-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo earns a berth in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs as the #5 seed and will travel to fourth seeded Cortland in the first round. The Blue Knights complete the regular season on Wednesday at St. John Fisher.
First year Kelsey Raschke came off the bench to score a pair of goals as the host Geneseo women's soccer team throttled Potsdam (2-15-1/0-9-0 SUNYAC) this afternoon, 7-0. Geneseo led 4-0 at the intermission and played all 26 available players in the win. In the first half, first year Sam Sherman scored on a direct kick at 4:15, senior Shannon Spusta intercepted a goal kick and scored at 24:13, Raschke netted the goal on a corner kick header from first year Stephanie Clookey at 29:41 and the Knights earned an own goal by Potsdam at 31:27. In the second half, senior Bethany Kwarta scored on a direct kick from 20 yards, sophomore Allison Kopunek scored on a scramble after junior Alexa Vojvodic sent a ball into the area and Raschke completed the scoring with a blast from 25 yards out that went just under the crossbar. Junior Julia Sanger posted the win with one save in the first half and Allison Stamp made two stops in the second half for the Knights. Geneseo is 2-10-3 overall and 2-5-2 in SUNYAC and finishes their season on Tuesday when they host the Elmira Soaring Eagles at 3 p.m.
Junior Kayla DeAngelis scored her second goal of the game and 10th of the season on a tip in of a shot by Rachel Atkins just 1:29 into overtime to give the Geneseo women's field hockey team a 2-1 win over the host Cortland Red Dragons (7-6/4-2 SUNYAC). Cortland led 1-0 at intermission on a goal at 26:03, but DeAngelis tied the game just 3:18 into the second half on a one-timer of a cross by junior Kerry Hosford. First year Dayna Mercer made nine saves in registering the win in nets for the Blue Knights, who move to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC play. Geneseo travels to Ithaca on Wednesday.
