Senior defender Rachel Atkins converted a penalty stroke 2:22 into the second overtime to lift the host Geneseo women's field hockey team past the Washington & Jefferson Presidents (9-6) in a non-conference game, 1-0. Geneseo outshot the Presidents by an 11-8 count and took 15 corners to only eight for W&J. The teams each had opportunities to score in the regulation and overtime sessions before Atkins ended the game. On the play, Geneseo was in a corner situation and Atkins initial shot got by the goalkeeper and hit the foot of a defender on the way into the cage. After the officials consulted, the Blue Knights were awarded the penalty stroke and Atkins got the game-winner into the upper left corner despite W&J goalie Kira Bunker getting a piece of the shot with her blocker. First year Dayna Mercer got the shutout in goal for Geneseo by making three saves, while Bunker stopped four shots and defender Aria DeSimini had two defensive saves for the Presidents. Geneseo moves to 9-4 on the year and travels to Oswego on Friday.
