2011-12 SUNY Geneseo Men's Track & Field

The SUNY Geneseo men's track team has been an intercollegiate sport since 1970. Head coach Dave Prevosti is a 1996 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan and is in his seventh season. The program was started by Paul Evans and in 1980, Rich Ceronie added the women's program as well as participating for the first time in indoor competition.

 

In 2012, the women's indoor track and field team highlighted their season with a third place finish at the SUNYAC championships and an eighth place mark at the ECAC championships for eighth year head coach Dave Prevosti. Junior Cailin Kowalewski qualified for the NCAA Division III meet, where she finished 13th in the 800 meters after setting a school record in the event earlier in the season with a time of 2:12.57. At the SUNYAC, the Knights scored 109 points to finish behind champion Cortland's 163 and Buffalo State's 121. Junior Marissa Liberati earned first team All-SUNYAC recognition after winning the 3,000 meters and finishing second in the mile run. First year Keira Wood was the lone runner on the All-SUNYAC second team after placing second in the 800 meters. The Blue Knights had a pair of second place relays at the SUNYAC meet with the 4X400 team of senior Kelly Brunscheen, first year Allison Hoh, Kowalewski and Wood and the Distance Medley Relay team of Mary Aldridge, Carolyn Mahon, Celeste Hoelzl and Emily Sullivan. Geneseo set two other school records during the season as junior Diahann Cuevo ran a 8.07 in the 60 meter dash and the 4X400 relay ran a 4:01.20.

 

In 2012, Prevosti capped his eighth season with the men's indoor track and field team with a 33nd place finish at the NCAA Division III national meet and a the program's seventh SUNYAC indoor title with 152 points to second place Cortland's 118. Geneseo had two individuals compete at the national meet as senior Lee Berube earned his seventh career All-America honor with a fourth place run in the 5,000 meters. Senior Wenley Louis claimed 10th place in the long jump after setting a school mark earlier in the season with a leap of 7.77 meters, the second longest in NCAA Division III history, on his way to Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year. At the SUNYAC meet, Berube, Louis, senior Eddie Novara and senior Chris Carter earned first team All-SUNYAC. Berube won the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs, Louis won the long and triple jumps and was named Field Athlete of the Meet, Novara won the mile and finished second in the 3,000 and Carter won the 800 meters. In addition, Geneseo's Distance Medley Relay team of Mark Streb, Matt Hart, Ryan Moynihan and Tom Clark finished first. Seniors Nwana Okafor and Colin Keenan and first years Phil Longo and Luke Taverne earned second team All-SUNYAC, as Okafor was second in the long jump, while the trio tied for second in the high jump. Along with Louis' school mark in the long jump, Geneseo posted three other school records during the season as Carter ran a 1:53.07 in the 800, Andrew Jehle posted a mark of 3,873 points in the heptathalon and the 4X800 relay team of junior Alex Brimstein, senior Kevin Bronson, Clark and Streb ran a 7:53.48.

 

In 2011, sophomore Marissa Liberati and junior Alyssa Smith highlighted the women's outdoor track and field season by earning All-America recognition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III championships for seventh year coach Dave Prevosti. Liberati, who was 13th in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:56.11 at the nationals, finished fourth in the steeplechase in a SUNYAC and school record time of 10:33.03 to earn her second All-America award, while Smith placed fifth in 10:34.60 to claim her first national award. The two women completed double wins in leading the Blue Knights to a third place score of 127 at the SUNYAC Championships and claim first team All-SUNYAC. Liberati won the steeplechase in 11:02.54 and the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:14.42 and Smith won the 800 meters in 2:13.73 and the 1,500 meters in 4:37.58. Senior Maria Barbaglia garnered second team All-SUNYAC after placing second in the hammer throw with a toss of 44.83 meters.

 

In 2011, Prevosti highlighted his seventh season by sending two individuals to the NCAA Division III outdoor championships after winning the SUNYAC team title. At the national championships, junior Lee Berube finished seventh in the 5,000 meters to claim his fifth career All-America certificate with a time of 14:47.09 and junior Nwana Okafor earned his first national honor with an eighth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.97 meters. At the SUNYAC championships, Geneseo scored 187 points to second place Cortland's 159. Berube claimed first team All-SUNYAC by winning the 5,000 meters in 14:50.59 and senior Mike McManus garnered first team after winning the high jump with a height of 1.98 meters. Geneseo placed four on the All-SUNYAC second team. Junior Eddie Novara ran second in the 10,000 meters in a time of 30:55.10, junior Greg Izzo placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 55.06, junior Colin Keenan placed second in the high jump with a leap of 1.93 meters and sophomore Tom Clark placed second in the 5,000 meters in 14:58.77.
