Salisbury, Md. – The Geneseo softball team (0-2) dropped first
two games of the season Friday, losing 7-5 to Virginia Wesleyan (10-4) and 5-1
to Shenandoah (5-4) at Salisbury’s Sea Gull Invitational. In their opener
against Virginia Wesleyan, the Knights scored twice in their final at bat and
brought the tying run to the plate before the Marlins escaped with the win.
First year shortstop Samantha Brown (Canton/Hugh
C. Williams) and senior outfielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) hit
run-scoring singles in the seventh following a two-out double by
sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore
(Getzville/Williamsville North).
Fillmore and Brown both scored runs in the
top of the first as the Knights took a 2-0 lead in their first time at bat. Fillmore led off with an
infield single, stole second and scored when Brown reached on an infield error.
Brown came around to score
another unearned run when senior first baseman Jessica
Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) reached on a dropped third strike.
Fillmore and Brown both had two of Geneseo’s
eight hits.
Senior Katie Gallagher (Gansevoort/Schuylerville) struck
out four Marlins in throwing a complete game.
In Friday’s second game, Brown and first
year outfielder Mikayla Moore (Stillwater/Stillwater)
both recorded a pair of hits. Moore scored Geneseo’s run, leading off the sixth
with a single between second and third base. After moving to second on a
pinch-hit single by Gallagher, Moore came around to score on a
run-scoring single up the middle by sophomore Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East).
Senior Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece
Arcadia) fanned four Hornets in her first Geneseo start.
The Knights wrap competition at the weekend tournament with games against Eastern
Mennonite and Hunter Saturday.
