The SUNY Geneseo Indoor Track and Field teams appeared in the initial Division III rankings as announced on Thursday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Geneseo men's team appeared at #3 in the national rankings with 112.31 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh ranked first with 143.96 and North Central College was second with 114.26. The women's team earned the #13 spot in the initial poll with 43.03 points as Illinois Wesleyan took the top spot with 152.18 points.
The Geneseo Blue Knights captured seven of the 13 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Week awards for the week ending January 17. Sophomore Wenley Louis, who also earned Rochester Area College Athletics (RACA) Honorable Mention Male Athlete of the Week, highlighted the awards with SUNYAC Male Field Athlete of the Week after qualifying automatically for the NCAA championships in the long jump. Senior Kristin Shumway garnered Female Field Athlete of the Week after winning two events and placing second in another and senior Tim Chichester captured Male Track Athlete of the Week after breaking the school record in the 3,000 meters as Geneseo took three of the four track and field honors.
Sophomore Josh Kaplan led a trio of swimmers and divers to win recognition after qualifying provisionally and setting a school record in the 100-yard backstroke on the way to Male Swimmer of the Week. Junior Michelle Rodriguez won Female Swimmer of the Week after winning three events and anchoring one winning relay, while junior Kelly Young won Female Diver of the Week after setting a school mark in one-meter diving and winning both boards in wins over M.C.C. and at the RIT tri-meet.
Lastly, sophomore Cory Gershon made 38 saves in a 2-2 tie at Castleton (Vt.) to earn SUNYAC Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week recognition.
