GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s basketball team (19-6,
14-4 SUNYAC) wrapped up an undefeated home season, closing out the regular
season with a 56-44 win over visiting Buffalo State (13-12, 9-9 SUNYAC)
Saturday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game.
The Knights will be the second seed for the six-team SUNYAC playoffs; they have a
first-round bye and will face either third-seeded Oswego or sixth seeded Cortland Friday at 6 p.m. in a semifinal game at top-seeded New Paltz.
Senior Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mount Mercy) recorded her fifth
double-double of the season, leading Geneseo with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
She also dished out a game-high five assists. Sophomore forward Shannon
McGinnis (Walworth/Gananda) scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds and
first year forward Allison McKenna (Huntington/John Glenn) finished with nine
points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. The Knights, who lead Division III
in rebounding margin, posted a 49-34 advantage on the boards.
Geneseo pulled away from a 17-16 halftime lead to open up a 31-20 advantage,
outscoring the Bengals 14-2 after Buffalo State had scored the first points of
the second period. The Bengals cut the Knights’ lead to four with 10:54
remaining but six straight Geneseo points – including four free throws by
McKenna – put the Knights in control for good.
