Tell us about your current internship? Employer, brief summary of duties, major projects.
This past summer, I interned for Luxottica, the industry leader in premium fashion, luxury and sports eyewear. Throughout the 8-week program, I worked on several projects such as creating a job description database, recruiting for several positions, and updating the Company’s associate guidebook. In addition, I assisted with time keeping, organizational announcement letters, and other administrative tasks. I also helped coordinate a 3-day Excel training course, employee sample sale, Q2 nomination award process, and company wellness event.
Is this your first internship?
No; I had an unpaid, part-time internship prior to this internship. In addition, I am currently interning for the Office of Career Development here at Geneseo.
Motivation. Why did you decide to do an internship?
I am a Business Administration major and didn’t quite know what area I wanted to pursue. Therefor, I decided to do an internship because I wanted to get experience in the field and see what area suited me best.
How did you find this particular internship?
I found this internship through a job board.
Recommendations for other students?
Internships are a great way to learn about the field you are interested in. It also helps you see what the real world is like. Lastly, it allows you to build your experience and start establishing a network. Finding an internship is a long process, but the right one will come along if you remain persistent and open-minded.
What did you learn about yourself by doing an internship?
I learned that it is important to love what you do. I would never want to pursue something that I wasn’t genuinely interested in. Human Resources is that something for me and I want to learn as much as I can about it. I am very excited for the future.
Did you have an aha moment during your internship?
If I had to pick one “a-ha moment” it would be when Luxottica had a wellness event. There was chair yoga, massages, a nutritionist/food demonstration, fresh juice samples and local gym/fitness center deals. I really enjoyed how the HR department was able to promote health in such a fun and nonintrusive way. It was awesome to see how there are “fun” parts to HR.
How did the internship impact your career goals? Have they changed?
This internship helped solidify my desire to work in Human Resources one day. At first, I wasn’t 100% sure what I wanted to do, but after this internship I know exactly what I want to do.
How has the internship made a difference in your life, personal goals?
This internship made me very excited to start the job search for after graduation. In addition, it improved my confidence and communication skills and made me realize how much I enjoy working and the independence and responsibility that come along with it.
Describe a typical day at your internship (or the most exciting day).
The most exciting day at my internship was when we met the president of Luxottica’s Wholesale North America. He asked us two questions: What do you like most about this company and if there was one thing that you would change/improve what would it be? The fact that he wanted to get to know the interns and wanted to hear our opinions made us feel like we were important and valued.
I couldn’t have asked for a better summer internship. Not only did it help me decide my future career goals, it made me realize how important company culture is. Luxottica encourages its employees to be imaginative, passionate, entrepreneurial, and simple & fast. It was an absolutely great company to work for which made me excited to go to work everyday.
