The Peace Corps is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2011 with a 40-year high in the number of volunteers — and Geneseo is doing its part.

Eighteen Geneseo alumni are currently serving throughout the world, including David Murphy '09, who is in Armenia.

On March 1, the college held a reception in the ballroom for approximately 50 students who attended and wanted to learn more from Shari Quan, a Peace Corps representative from New York City, and alumna Emily Hurley '08, who shared her experience living and working in Mali.

The college has a rich history in the Peace Corps. Two hundred and eleven alumni have served since the Corps was created in 1961. Geneseo consistently is near the Corps' top 20 colleges nationwide for recruits.
