Robert Viglietta '12 is studying this semester at Haceteppe University in Ankara, Turkey. He'll have even more time in the country this summer, as a guest of the U.S. State Department.

The Department of State offers all-expenses paid, intensive training in 17 foreign countries whose languages are deemed critical for defense, business and other world issues. Viglietta, a political science major, is the third Geneseo student to be awarded the prestigious Critical Languages Award. He will study Turkish and live with a local family. He hope sto someday work within government.

Mark Simeone '10 and Jim Kuras '09 spent the 2009 summer in Russia and Turkey, respectively. Cynthia Klima, associate professor of languages and literatures, worked with all three students in applying for the awards.

"I think that Geneseo students have been successful because of faculty commitment to the future of our students," says Klima. "The Department of Languages and Literatures is especially devoted to the students' improvement of their language skills and heavily supports not only the departmental offerings in every way, but also study abroad and international education."
