Rochester's own world-class orchestra will perform on campus April 24, with featured soloists from Geneseo's Department of Music — pianist Jonathan Gonder, professor and music department chair, and soprano Pamela Kurau, visiting assistant professor.

Irish conductor Courtney Lewis, associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, will conduct the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concert, which was rescheduled from last summer when rain prohibited the completion of an outdoor performance.

Gonder will perform Tchaikovsky's "Piano Concerto No. 1." Kurau will bring pieces from the famous operas "Carmen" and "La Boheme" to life on stage. The orchestra also will perform Beethoven's "Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 55."

"It is always a delight when the RPO comes to our campus to perform, but having two of our music faculty members featured as soloists is generating additional inspiration within the Geneseo community for what promises to be a tremendous concert," said President Christopher C. Dahl.

Wednesday's concert will be Gonder's first with the RPO, though he has performed many solo concerts and concerto performances and has presented solos with other symphonies and orchestras. He has appeared on national television and radio in Canada and on NPR in the United States, and has received numerous awards and prizes during his career.

Kurau frequently collaborates with many of Rochester's musicians, performing with the RPO, Chamber Music Rochester, Eastman Virtuosi and appearances in numerous faculty recitals at the Eastman School of Music, where she serves part-time as assistant professor of English lyric diction. She also has performed as a soloist with the Detroit Symphony among others.

  • The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs with Geneseo soloists on Wednesday, April 24, at 8 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. The performance is made possible, in part, with support from the Gertrude L. Chanler RPO Fund.
