Why does Geneseo need private support?

Gifts from alumni, parents and friends of the College are a vital source of support for Geneseo, providing critical unrestricted funding to virtually every area of campus life and student learning.

Support from the State of New York has decreased to 14% of our total operating budget, an all-time low. Gifts to Geneseo help us provide the enhancements to education that can't be met through tuition and fees -- for example, scholarships, faculty support, groundbreaking undergraduate research projects, athletic team equipment and travel support, and a variety of campus life and student learning opportunities – truly enhancing the quality of the educational experience at Geneseo.

Why does my participation matter? What if I can only give $10?

Every gift of every amount has a direct and immediate impact on life and learning at Geneseo. Additionally, gifts of any amount factor into the participation rate used as a benchmark in the college rankings conducted by U.S. News & World Report. A higher ranking not only helps leverage additional gifts from foundations and corporations, it also strengthens the value of your degree.

What's an unrestricted gift? Why are they important to Geneseo?

Unrestricted funds are directed to areas where need is greatest. Unrestricted funds support merit scholarships, undergraduate and faculty research grants, internships, athletics, student life organizations, study abroad opportunities, and other programs and initiatives that benefit student life and learning at Geneseo. For many of these programs unrestricted is a primary source of funding.
