Robert “Bob” Blackburn was a master printer and master artist.  Blackburn founded the Printmaking Workshop with artist Will Barnet in 1948.  The Manhattan Workshop became a printmaker’s mecca during mid and late 20th century.  Artist came from Asia, Europe, South America and Africa to work with Blackburn in his shop.  He mentored the whole person as well as the artist’s work and process.  Robert Blackburn inspired some of those artists who worked with him to initiate print studios in their hometowns and home countries.  It was the spirit of openness and sharing that inspired artists to do the same for others.

Blackburn received the MacArthur Prize in 1992 other grants and awards

Include Purchase Award, Library of Congress, 1950; Purchase Award, Brooklyn Museum, 1951; MacArthur Award, 1992; Printer Emeritus Award, Southern Graphics Council, 1993; J. Eugene Grigsby Award, National Arts Education Association, 1993; in addition Blackburn received five honorary doctorates.
