Motion 5: Timing of Elections

Whereas elections are now run electronically, spanning two weeks instead of a single meeting date,

Whereas other elements of the election calendar have changed slightly,

Whereas the University Faculty Senator Alternate is the only faculty office for which vacancies are filled by election,

Be it moved to amend the Constitution of the Faculty of SUNY Geneseo, and the Bylaws thereof, by making the following deletions (indicated with strike-out text) and additions (indicated with underlined text).

CONSTITUTION ARTICLE V: OFFICERS

Section 5:

The University Faculty Senator, …[description of the office unchanged]… Any vacancy in the office of University Faculty Senator shall be filled immediately by the Alternate. Any vacancy in the office of Alternate shall be filled by election as in Section  6 within the first two weeks that the College is in session following the occurrence of the vacancy.

Section 6:

Election to the offices of the Faculty as specified in Sections 1, 2, 3, shall be by secret ballot by the highest number of votes cast by the Faculty from a slate prepared by the Committee on Nominations and Elections. Elections shall be held not later than April 15 for vacancies occurring through expiration of term of office. Elections to fill vacancies occurring at other times shall be held within the first two weeks that the College is in session following the occurrence of the vacancy or as prescribed in Section 3.

BYLAWS ARTICLE I: ELECTIONS

Section 2: Elective Procedures

a. Presentation of the Slate of Officers

1. One At least one month before the start of the annual election, the Committee on Nominations and Elections shall present a slate of nominees for Presiding Officer of the Faculty, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. The Committee shall also prepare a slate of nominees for, and Senators-at-Large at the designated time requested by the Executive Committee.

3. The slate of officers nominees shall be published in the College Senate Bulletin by the Secretary of the Senate at least two one weeks before the start of the annual election.

b. Time of Election

1. General elections shall take place annually, completing no later than April 15 20.

Section 4: Election of Senators

a. Senators-at-Large shall be elected not later than April 15 by secret ballot by a simple majority of those eligible and voting according to the quorum requirements of ARTICLE II, Section 3 of the By-Laws of the Constitution of the Faculty.

b a. Senators representing Departments shall be elected by a method selected by the department. This election shall take place after the election of at-large Senators and not later than May 1.

c b. Administrative Senators shall be elected in the Spring by a method recommended by the Administration, in consultation with the Executive Committee. The election process shall take place after the election of at-Large Senators and not later than May 30.
