Airport Pick-up

Once the student cofirms their flight arrival information with the ISSS office, a staff member is assigned to meet the students at the International Airport in Rochester, New York.

Room Move-In

Upon arrival, students are driven to the Geneseo Campus and move into their residence halls. There will be volunteers to help students find their assiged room and help them move in. The ISSS office has limited supply of bed linens for students to borrow for the first few days when they arrive. During the first day of orientation, students are taken shopping where they are able to purchase linens, room supplies and decorations of their choice.

Service of orientation

Orientation begins long before students arrive on campus. Once a student confirms their intention of coming to Geneseo, they will be instructed to check their MyCourses account. A series of information packets will become available as their arrival date nears. Topics that are covered in these information packets include:

  1. instructions on applying for a visa
  2. readings on American culture
  3. checklists of things to do before leaving home
  4. checklists of items to carry to the U.S.

The goal of these information packets is to provide a description of American values and behaviors to set students' expectations about life in the U.S., to assist students with the pratical steps involved in applying for a visa and to advise students what to pack to come live in Geneseo.

Orientation does not end when classes begin. Throughout the semester, the ISSS office and ESOL department together offer special programs and workships designed to ease the adjustment into Geneseo. Upon arrival, the "formal" orientation program inludes presentations on the American classroom and American culture. Other topics include legal information and availability of ESOL courses. Part of orientation is dedicated to shopping for room and study necessities. Geneseo student and staff members escort new international students to the shopping malls to explain the pricing schemes used in the U.S. and suggest the best purchase students can make.
