Study Abroad Opportunities

The study abroad and/or service-learning programs in Latin America listed below are offered by SUNY Geneseo and have been specifically created to promote the study and appreciation for Latin America and its people.  Additional programs can be found by visiting SUNY Geneseo's Office of International Programs.

Argentina and Uruguay

Historical and Contemporary Urbanism in Argentina and Uruguay.

Five-week, six-credit summer program program consists of two courses: HIST 288, Buenos Aires: Mirror of a Nation, and ENVR 288, Environmental Issues in Buenos Aires and Montevideo (3 or 6 credits)

None required, although intermediate (2 years at the college level) proficiency recommended.

Costa Rica

Full Immersion at Universidad Nacional

Full immersion, semester or year-long full immersion study.  Especially designed for Spanish language majors or Latin American Studies minors in their junior or senior year and/or graduate students.  (12 to 15 credits per semester)

Advanced (minimum two 300-level courses).

Costa Rica

B.E.S.T. (Broadening the Experience of Spanish Teachers) Program at Estudios Hispánicos
(Universidad Nacional)

Offered summers only (6 or 12 weeks) to provide Spanish majors, but especially Spanish language teacher candidates, qualified graduate students, and K-12 teachers the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, and their understanding of Spanish language pedagogy. (6 to 15 credits)

Costa Rica

Intensive Spanish at Estudios Hispánicos

Spanish courses for students at all levels of proficiency, from true beginners to advanced, offered spring, summer and fall. (6 to 15 credits)

Nicaragua

Service Learning in El Sauce

Students and communities of young adults throughout the country have the opportunity to collectively apply their spirit of volunteerism and their education through service to El Sauce, an economically disadvantaged community in Nicaragua, Central America.  Offered Winter intersession, spring semester, spring break, summer and fall semester.  (1 to 12 credits)

Some Spanish (one year college level) recommended.

Peru

Spanish in Cuzco (NEW:  Starts spring 2009; apply now!)

Spanish courses for students at all levels of proficiency, from true beginners to advanced, in one of the most culturally and historically rich cities in the World!  Service-learning and volunteer placements can also be arranged.  Offered spring, summer and fall.  (6 to 15 credits)
