The women's basketball team traveled to Cortland tonight for the SUNYAC opener and downed the Red Dragons by a score of 61-52. Geneseo jumped on Cortland and led 12-4 with 13:22 left in the first on a three-pointer by first year Melissa Graham, who finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Red Dragons recovered to score 14 consecutive points to take an 18-12 lead, but Geneseo got another three-pointer by Graham and a layup by junior Khadija Campbell in the closing minute of the first half to trail 25-22. In the second half, the Blue Knights took the lead for good with 10:30 remaining on a three-point basket by sophomore Katelyn Charbonneau, who totaled 10 points and four assists. Geneseo secured the win as sophomore Bri Dunton scored all eight of her points in the final 1:13 of the game, including a three-pointer that gave the Knights a 56-49 advantage. Junior Alyssa Polosky paced Geneseo with 12 points and 10 rebounds, first year Lisa Rufer hit 3-4 from the arc for nine points and Campbell finished with six points, six assists and five boards. Geneseo hit 23-55 (41.8%) from the field, 9-28 (32.1%) from the arc and won the rebound battle, 43-32. Geneseo moves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in SUNYAC and travels to Oswego on Saturday.
Men's Ice Hockey
The men's ice hockey team traveled to Cortland tonight and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Red Dragons. Geneseo opened the scoring at 1:16 of the first period when junior Michael Forgione scored from senior Dan Brown and first year Kaz Iwamoto. Cortland tied the contest at 9:42 of the first and the Red Dragons ripped open the contest with three consecutive goals over a 5:06 span of the second stanza. Brown made the score 4-2 at 14:05 of the second with his sixth goal of the season on assists from sophomore Jake Yard and Iwamoto. In the third, senior Phil Rose trimmed the lead to one goal at 15:45 from Yard and senior Trevor Foster. Geneseo pulled goaltender Adrian Rubeniuk late in the third, which led to a Cortland empty net goal at 19:40. Rubeniuk finished with 17 saves in taking the loss as Geneseo falls to 4-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in SUNYAC. The Ice Knights travel to Oswego, ranked first nationally in the USCHO.com poll, on Saturday.
The men's basketball team traveled to Cortland and dropped a 77-56 decision in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. The Red Dragons scored the initial eight points of the game on the way to a 25-4 advantage after 10 minutes and a 52-14 lead at the intermission. In the opening 10-minute stretch, Cortland shot 10-12 from the floor and held the Blue Knights to 2-18 shooting. In the second half, Geneseo mounted a brief comeback by scoring 17 consecutive points to open the stanza, but could not get closer than 18 points during the half. Sophomore Abe Miller hit six of 12 shots on his way to a career-high 13 points and sophomore John Drazan posted career bests with 12 points and 10 rebounds, including 6-7 from the free throw line. Junior Mike Baker added six points and seven assists in the loss. Geneseo falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in SUNYAC and travels to Oswego on Saturday.
