Men's Ice Hockey
The men's ice hockey team hosted Lebanon Valley today and skated to an 8-4 win as first year Kaz Iwamoto scored two goals and one assist to pace Geneseo. Sophomore Jonathan Redlick and first year Corbin Rosmarin netted a goal with two assists and senior Dan Brown scored twice as the Ice Knights broke open a 1-0 first intermission lead with four goals in the second period. Sophomore Danny Scagnelli added two helpers, while sophomores Clint Olson and Jimmy Powers netted single goals. Junior Michael Battaglia made his first career start and picked up the win in nets by making 25 saves. Geneseo moves to 7-8 on the season and travels to Castleton on Tuesday.
The men's basketball team hosted Oneonta today and lost by a score of 80-79 as their final minute comeback attempt came up one point short. The Knights led by as many as 10 points in the first half on the way to a 42-36 lead as sophomore Mike Hoy scored 14 of his 21 points. In the second stanza, Geneseo led 53-38 with 17:43 remaining, but Oneonta stormed back by outscoring Geneseo 36-14 over a 13-minute span to extend to a 74-67 lead with 4:25 left. After a pair of Oneonta free throws gave the Dragons an 80-74 advantage with 36 ticks left, senior Brandon Simpson hit a jumper with 17 seconds left, stole the inbounds pass and converted a three-point play to draw Geneseo to 80-79. Junior Mike Baker stole the ensuing inbounds and missed a layup as he was falling to the ground with 11 seconds left. Oneonta failed to make the front end of a one-and-one opportunity, setting up another chance for the Blue Knights, however, sophomore John Drazan's short jumper narrowly missed falling in as he was fouled and neither free throw attempt would drop with 1.7 seconds remaining. Simpson led the Knights with 25 points on 9-14 from the field and 6-7 from the line and Hoy scored his 21 points on 6-12 from the field, 5-7 from the arc and 4-4 from the charity stripe. Baker and sophomore Abe Miller finished with 10 points each with the latter grabbing nine rebounds and Drazan scored eight points on 4-7 shooting. Geneseo falls to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in SUNYAC and begins Wendy's College Classic play on Wednesday.
The women's basketball team hosted the Oneonta Red Dragons this afternoon and lost by a score of 65-61. Oneonta raced to a 37-25 lead at halftime despite Geneseo first year Lisa Rufer hitting a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer. Oneonta led by 17 at 58-41 with 14:17 remaining when the Blue Knights hit a trio of shots from behind the arc during a 16-2 run to pull within three at 60-57 with 5:41 left. The defenses took over in the remaining five minutes as the teams combined for only nine points the rest of the way. Junior Khadija Campbell scored 15 points on 6-9 from the field and 3-3 from the line to lead Geneseo. Junior Alyssa Polosky posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards, first year Melissa Graham added 10 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Bri Dunton contributed eight points, four assists, four steals and four caroms. Geneseo falls to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in SUNYAC and plays in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic on Tuesday.
