Friday's Contest Summaries

Women's Basketball

Junior Khadija Campbell scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds and the Blue Knights held Oswego to 12 points and 17.2% shooting in the first half in defeating the Lakers by a score of 49-41. Sophomore Bri Dunton added 13 points, including 6-6 from the line in the final 1:16, and junior Brittany Finkle grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked three shots and made three steals for Geneseo. The team defense was the story of the contest as Geneseo held Oswego to 24.5% shooting on 13-53, while the Blue Knights mustered just 23% from the floor on 14-61. Geneseo led 18-12 at halftime as their largest lead was nine at 13-4 with 7:24 remaining. The Knights held a 13-point cushion at 39-26 on junior Alyssa Polosky's layup with 5:28 to play and Oswego would get no closer than five points at 41-36 with 1:28 remaining. Geneseo moves to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in SUNYAC and hosts Cortland on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Men's Basketball

Senior Brandon Simpson, who finished with a game-high 22 points on 10-16 from the floor and 2-2 from the line, hit a 12-foot jumper from the right side of the lane with three seconds to play to give Geneseo a 68-66 win over visiting Oswego. Freshman Sean Michele hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to tie the game for Oswego. Geneseo placed four players in double figures as junior Mike Baker finished with 14 points and six assists, junior John Scott matched his career-best with 11 points on 5-6 shooting and sophomore Abe Miller chipped in with 10 points on five of eight from the floor. The Blue Knights scored the final four points of the first half to take a 33-25 lead at the break and extended to their largest lead of the game at 39-27 with 17:43 to play. The Lakers drew within four at 41-37, but a pair of Scott buckets helped extend the Geneseo advantage back to 10 at 49-39. Oswego scored nine straight points to draw within one, but Geneseo quickly reclaimed the advantage with six straight points. Oswego trailed by seven at 63-56 with 2:24 to play, but a layup and three-pointer on consecutive possesions brought the game to 63-61 with 1:38 to go. After a Baker lay-in gave the Knights a four-point cushion, Michele drove for two with 46 seconds to play before senior Jordan Blair hit one of two foul shots to make the score 66-63 with 21 seconds left. Geneseo hit 53.6% from the field (30-56), but missed on all seven attempts from beyond the arc. Geneseo advances to 5-12 overall and 4-6 in SUNYAC and hosts Cortland on Saturday at 4 p.m.
