The women's lacrosse team hosted #8 Cortland and saw their upset bid fall one goal short, 8-7. Each team scored two goals in the opening eight minutes before junior Anna Hutchings netted her second and third goals of the game just 27 seconds apart to give Geneseo a 4-2 lead with 5:12 left in the opening half. Cortland responded as Lindsay Abbott scored with 4:06 left and assisted Jess Fritz with 2:04 remaining to tie the game at four at the intermission. In the second half, Geneseo would take a 6-5 lead on senior Abby Hungerford's second goal of the game with 10:55 left, but the Red Dragons would net three consecutive scores at 8:58, 7:34 and the eventual game-winner by Abbott at 6:12. First year Rachel Petrone scored her second of the game with 3:20 to play for Geneseo to cut the lead to 8-7, but the Blue Knights could not score the equalizer. First year Maria Di Fato scored two goals with one assist and 10 caused turnovers for Cortland and Ally Levy stopped seven shots to post the win in goal. Geneseo's Annie Smith made 11 saves in cage for the Blue Knights, who fall to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Rochester on Saturday.
The women's softball team traveled to Cortland today and were swept by the Red Dragons, 4-1 in game one and 6-4 in game two. In the opener, Cortland scored single runs in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings as junior Janine Montera scattered five hits, three earned runs and two walks with four strikeouts. Geneseo scored their lone run in the third inning when Kelsey Ogden doubled, moved to third on Karen Wagner's bunt single and scored on senior Katie Holm's RBI ground out. In the second game, Geneseo took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single by first year Stef Rosenberg, a double by junior Sam Guarrera and a sacrifice fly by Holm. Cortland tied the game in the bottom of the first and erupted for five runs in the second for a 6-1 lead. Rosenberg belted a three-run homer in the seventh after sophomore Mary Bostwick singled and pinch hitter Katie Gallagher walked. Bostwick allowed 10 hits, five earned runs and two walks with one strikeout. The Blue Knights fall to 9-11 overall and 1-5 in SUNYAC and travel to Oswego on Saturday.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Select members of the men's outdoor track and field team participated at Bucknell University on Friday night against primarily Division I competition and posted four NCAA Division III provisional qualifying performances. Sophomore Wenley Louis finished second in the long jump with a distance of 7.12 meters to highlight the performances. Sophomore Lee Berube placed fifth in the 5,000 meters in 14:29.64 and junior Ryan O'Connor finished ninth in the same race in 14:41.22. Senior Tim Chichester ran a 10th place time of 30:28.71 in the 10,000 meters.
