Friday's Contest Summaries

Women's Lacrosse

The women's lacrosse team used a five-goal spurt in the first half on the way to an 8-5 lead at intermission, going on to defeat the visiting Fredonia Blue Devils by a score of 15-11. The game was tied at two when the Knights erupted for the five goals as senior Tara Murphy, who finished with four goals, two assists and three draws, contributed two scores and one helper during the span. In the second half, Amy Simon scored three of her game-high six goals for Fredonia in six minutes to draw within 12-10 with 10:42 to play, but Geneseo countered with goals by junior Anna Hutchings and sophomore Kim Magee, who finished with three goals. Senior Abby Hungerford scored two goals with one assist and three draws, Hutchings added five groundballs and four draws to her two goals and first years Rachel Petrone and Lea Paris netted two goals each. Junior Annie Smith made six saves in posting the win in nets. The Blue Knights move to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in SUNYAC and travel to Buffalo State on Saturday.

Women's Tennis

The women's tennis team traveled to RIT this afternoon and finished their regular season with a record of 16-2 with a 9-0 blanking of the Tigers. Sophomore Monica Vieth won first singles, 6-2, 6-1 and teamed with classmate Julia Passik to win at first doubles, 8-1. Sophomore Melissa Baker won at second singles, 6-1, 6-0 and teamed with classmate Lauren Johnson to win second doubles, 8-1. Sophomore Katie Gayvert, who won 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles and first year Sarah Shields, who won 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles, combined to take a 8-0 victory at third doubles. Passik won at third singles, 6-1, 6-1 and senior Anna Lehet finished the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles. Geneseo heads to the NCAA Division III tournament with a first round match on May 14.

Women's Softball

The women's softball team split a doubleheader with Oneonta this afternoon, taking game one, 7-2, and falling in game two, 5-1. In the opener, junior Janine Montera scattered three hits, allowing one earned run and one walk with five strikeouts. Geneseo's top five hitters pounded out 10 hits as senior Katie Holm was 3-4 with a run, a double and three RBI. Junior Megan Pogemiller went 2-3 with two RBI, first year Stef Rosenberg went 2-2 with two runs, two walks and an RBI and sophomore KK Schaus finished 2-4 with three runs scored. In the second game, Oneonta scored two runs in the second and three more in the third to take command early. First year Jess Steubing doubled to open the sixth inning and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Kelsey Ogden for the lone Geneseo run. Sophomore Mary Bostwick went 2-3 at the plate and allowed the five runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings, while first year Katie Gallagher walked one in 2/3 innings of work. The Knights move to 23-15 on the season and host New Paltz on Saturday at 11 a.m.
