The Geneseo Blue Knights (16-3) faced the Wilkes University (Pa.) Colonels (16-4) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis championships this morning and dropped a 5-3 decision. Wilkes advances to take on fifth-seeded host Denison, who received a first round bye, in the second round on Friday.
The Blue Knights took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match as sophomores Monica Vieth and Julia Passik won 8-6 at first doubles and sophomores Melissa Baker and Lauren Johnson won 8-2 at second doubles. Sophomore Katie Gayvert and first year Sarah Shields lost an 8-4 match at third doubles.
In singles play, Passik won the lone singles match at #3 for Geneseo by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Vieth dropped a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 match at first singles, Baker lost 6-2, 6-3 at second singles, senior Anna Lehet lost 6-4, 6-1 at fourth singles and Gayvert lost a 6-0, 6-2 match at fifth singles. Shields match at sixth singles went unfinished after the Colonels clinched the overall match. Shields led the match, 6-2, 4-2 upon suspension.
