Friday's Contest Summaries

Women's Tennis

The women's tennis team traveled to Fredonia for the opening match of SUNYAC West round robin play and grounded the Brockport Golden Eagles by a score of 9-0. Junior Monica Vieth was one of three Geneseo players to blank her Eagle opponent, 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and teamed with junior Julia Passik to capture first doubles, 8-4. First year Lucy Mehrabyan won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and teamed with junior Melissa Baker to win 8-1 at second doubles. Junior Katie Gayvert, won won 6-4, 6-0 at fourth singles, and sophomore Sarah Shields, who won 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles, teamed to take third doubles, 8-0. Passik earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory at third singles and sophomore Katie Talbot won 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. The Blue Knights are 2-0 on the year and take on the host Blue Devils on Saturday and Oswego on Sunday.

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team began the Ithaca Invitational tonight by splitting a pair of matches. In the opener, Geneseo defeated Baptist Bible, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 26-24. Senior Krista Frieling led the attack with 15 kills and seven digs, first year Noelle Morrison handed out 42 assists and junior Kat Strickland combined nine kills, four aces and four blocks. Sophomore Laura Galvin added 34 digs for the Knights. In the second match, the Blue Knights lost to Skidmore, 25-20, 16-25, 25-20, 25-15. Morrison dished 27 assists and Frieling had eight kills and seven blocks. Junior Jackie Inserillo totaled seven kills, while Strickland and first year Alysia Negron added six kills each. Geneseo is 3-4 on the season and continues with the tournament on Saturday.

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team hosted Clarkson this afternoon and lost a 4-3 decision as the Golden Knights recovered from a 3-0 deficit at intermission to stun Geneseo. The Blue Knights opened the three-goal cushion in the first half as junior Will Slevin finished into an open net a cross which deflected off the post at 5:19, sophomore Rob Loccisano headed in a corner kick by senior Yuta Shimizu at 20:17 and Ryan Yurchak finished a breakaway at 34:51 after a through-ball assist by Loccisano. In the second half, Clarkson began the comeback at 61:13 when David Maiorino converted a direct kick from the right corner of the box that caught Geneseo out of position. The Golden Knights got a pair of goals from Bryan Malone at 65:02 and 69:54 as Elliot Carter crossed to Malone on the left post for the first goal and then fed a low direct kick into the box that Malone finished to tie the game. At 83:49, Tobin Boomer collected a loose ball at the left corner of top of the box and blasted a shot inside the left post for the game-winner. Geneseo had several chances in the waning moments, but could not score the equalizer. Junior Sam Murphy made three saves in taking the loss for the Blue Knights as they fall to 1-2-1. Geneseo hosts St. Lawrence on Saturday at 2 p.m.
