Women's Field Hockey
First year defender Bridget McGovern scored two goals, the first of her career, the latter providing the game-winner with 9:44 remaining to give Geneseo a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting St. Lawrence as the Blue Knights extended their win streak to ten games. McGovern scored the opening goal off a penalty corner as senior Stephanie Maisonet passed to three yards out and McGovern fired it home to give Geneseo a 1-0 lead at the intermission. In the second half, St. Lawrence came out flying, getting a goal from Courtney Cartier off a corner from Julia Croyle at 38:33 and then taking a 2-1 lead when Erika Swits scored in transition on a blast from the right side just inside the scoring arc. The Blue Knights tied the score at 51:11 when senior Michelle Milkovich notched her 10th of the season on a give-and-go with classmate Erin Zalewski on a penalty corner. On the game-winner, Milkovich took another penalty corner at the top of the arc and passed to McGovern on the right, where she blasted a shot home. Sophomore Caitlyn Dowell posted the win in nets by making one save as Geneseo controlled the shot count, 18-4, and the corner tally, 15-4. Geneseo moves to 11-1 on the season and hosts Brockport on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Junior Ian Mort had a goal and an assist in the final 16 minutes of the contest to lead Geneseo to a 3-2 comeback win over the visiting Cortland Red Dragons. Cortland opened the scoring at 22:50, but the Blue Knights evened the score prior to intermission on their first of three restart goals as senior Yuta Shimizu placed a free kick in the box where first year Craig Schackner scored his fourth goal of the season at 36:42. In the second half, Cortland took a 2-1 lead at the 49:05 mark. The game remained 2-1 until junior Colin Begy fed a corner kick into the box and Mort knocked it in for his eighth goal of the season at 73:49. Senior Andy Marzo got the game-winner with 1:49 remaining when he deflected Mort's direct kick from outside the area into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Geneseo's Mike Madarasz picked up the win by making four saves as the Blue Knights advance to 6-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in SUNYAC. The Knights host Oswego on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The women's soccer team traveled to Cortland this afternoon and dropped a tough 1-0 decision as the Red Dragons scored the lone goal of the contest with just 57 seconds left in regulation. Cortland's goal came on a shot from the right side of the box from 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the net. The Red Dragons posted 20 shots to nine for Geneseo. Senior Katie Clerkin made seven saves as the Knights fall to 8-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Oswego on Saturday.
