Men's Ice Hockey
The men's ice hockey team hosted the Neumann Knights in their season opener tonight and skated to a 3-2 win. Neumann opened the scoring at 3:36 of the first period, but Geneseo came right back to tie the game as senior Andrew Rygiel fired a low shot under the Knight goalie for his first of the season. Sophomore Colin de Jersey and classmate Nick Ryan picked up assists on the play at 5:49. In the second period, Geneseo controlled the shot count, 17-6, and scored a pair of power play goals. The first came when sophomore Ryan Bulach deflected junior Jake Yard's point shot with junior Clint Olson gaining the second assist at 3:07 and the second score came at 11:36 when David Arduin finished a pass in the crease with Rich Manley and Jonathan Redlick getting the helpers. Junior Cory Gershon made 27 saves to earn the win in goal for Geneseo. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Junior Kelly Bergin scored three goals, including the game-winner off an assist from first year Alexa Vojvodic with 25:50 remaining to give the women's soccer team a 3-2 win over visiting Buffalo State College. In the first half, junior Anne Beinetti beat a defender down the left side and crossed to 10 yards in front where Bergin gave Geneseo a 1-0 at 8:55. The game remained 1-0 until the 51:55 mark when Buffalo State tied the score. Bergin collected a rebound in front and deposited into the open net at 59:40 for a 2-1 Geneseo lead, but the Bengals responded 2:07 later to even the score at two. On the game-winner, junior Bre Glynn served a corner kick that Vojvodic touched to Bergin on the back post. Senior Katie Clerkin made seven saves to post the win in goal for Geneseo as the Blue Knights move to 10-5-0 overall and 4-4-0 in SUNYAC. Geneseo hosts Fredonia on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The men's soccer team traveled to Buffalo State and defeated the Bengals by a score of 4-0 as junior Colin Begy handed out two assists. Senior Ben Ariola scored the opener at 12:30 off a Begy assist, first year Ryan Yurchak got an unassisted goal at 23:07 and first year Craig Schackner netted his fifth of the year at 34:49 for a 3-0 lead at intermission. In the second half, Begy set up junior Ian Mort for his 10th goal of the season at 53:41. Junior Sam Murphy made one save to post the shutout as the Blue Knights advance to 8-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in SUNYAC. Geneseo travels to Fredonia on Saturday.
The women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at second round of SUNYAC West round robin pool play at Oswego today. In the opener, Geneseo defeated Brockport, 25-16, 25-16, 24-26, 13-25, 15-12. Senior Krista Frieling led the attack with 15 kills and junior Kat Strickland added 10 kills. First year Noelle Morrison dished out 35 assists, sophomore Laura Galvin claimed 21 digs and junior Jackie Inserillo contributed 11 digs and four service aces. In the second match, the Blue Knights lost to Fredonia, 25-12, 25-22, 25-14. Strickland had four kills and four blocks, Frieling added six kills and Galvin totaled 14 digs and four assists. Geneseo is 11-19 overall and 4-2 in SUNYAC and continues with pool play on Saturday.
