Saturday's Contest Summaries

Women's Field Hockey

The women's field hockey team won their 13th straight game with a 3-1 victory at Hartwick this afternoon. Senior Michelle Milkovich scored her 14th goal of the season to eclipse the single season record on an assist from sophomore Katie Gallo at 22:36 to open the scoring. First year Katie Farley got the eventual game winner at 43:32 and classmate Bridget McGovern added an insurance goal at 51:14 for the Blue Knights. Hartwick got their lone goal with just 59 ticks left in the contest. Geneseo moves to 14-1 on the season and hosts Ithaca on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team hosted the Fredonia Blue Devils this afternoon and earned a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs with a 3-0 victory as junior Anne Beinetti scored a goal with two assists. Junior Melanie Rocchio gave Geneseo a 1-0 lead at 26:58, scoring at the back post after a cross from Beinetti. Late in the second half, Rocchio crossed to Beinetti in front and she flicked a pass to the right post, where junior Kelly Bergin scored to make it 2-0 at 85:21. Beinetti's individual effort in the scoring box completed the scoring with 34 seconds remaining. Senior Katie Clerkin made four saves to post her 23rd career shutout, which stands second all-time. Geneseo is 11-5 overall and 5-4 in SUNYAC and hosts Nazareth College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Women's Swimming & Diving

The women's swimming and diving team traveled to Buffalo State this afternoon and won their season opener, 124-82. Sophomore Elyssa Max won a pair of events in taking the 500 free (5:31.36) and the 1000 free (11:22.25). The Blue Wave had five other winners today as Meghan Green captured the 200 free in 2:02.25, senior Jennifer Anthone won the 200 IM in 2:20.38, first year Corinne Vairo took the 100 fly 1:04.58, senior Michelle Rodriguez won the 100 back in 1:03.35 and Erin O'Brien won the 100 breast in 1:13.26. Geneseo hosts the Geneseo Invitational on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Men's Swimming & Diving

The men's swimming and diving team opened their season with a 131-75 victory at Buffalo State this afternoon. First year Paul Jennings won the 1000 free in 10:52.70 and the 100 breast in 1:04.94 to lead the Blue Wave. Geneseo boasted six other winners today as Dan Strothenke won the 200 free in 1:52.10, Andrew Kuter captured the 50 free in 22.4, Austin Brennan won the 100 fly in 55.50, sophomore Frank Schiappa crossed first in the 100 free in 49.22, junior Josh Kaplan won the 100 back in a pool record time of 54.11 and Nate Foley took the 500 free in 4:59.93. Geneseo hosts their Invitational on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Men's Ice Hockey

Junior Danny Scagnelli's rebound goal off a shot by sophomore Colin de Jersey with 1:48 remaining in the game lifted the men's hockey team to a 3-3 tie with Neumann College this afternoon. Geneseo opened the scoring at 3:05 of the first when sophomore Ryan Bulach scored his second of the season from Blake O'Connor and David Arduin on the power play. Neumann took a 2-1 lead with goals at 10:29 of the first and 4:56 of the second period. Geneseo tied the game at two with 5:08 remaining on first year Zachary Vit's first career goal, but Neumann reclaimed the lead just 37 seconds later. Sophomore Adrian Rubeniuk made 40 saves in nets for Geneseo as they move to 1-0-1 on the season. The Ice Knights host Plattsburgh on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women's Volleyball

The women's volleyball team continued with SUNYAC West round robin pool play today and split a pair of matches. In the opener, Geneseo defeated Oswego in three sets, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18. Senior Krista Frieling had 11 kills and junior Kat Strickland totaled 10 kills, four service aces and six blocks to lead Geneseo. First year Noelle Morrison handed out 32 assists and sophomore Laura Galvin contributed 15 digs. In the second match, Geneseo fell to Buffalo State, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19. Frieling and Strickland had nine kills and Morrison dished 22 assists. Geneseo is 12-20 on the season and earns second place in the SUNYAC West with a 5-3 record. The Blue Knights travel to Elmira on Tuesday.

Men's Soccer

The men's soccer team traveled to Fredonia this afternoon and dropped a tough 1-0 decision. The Blue Devils scored at 28:57 and made the lone goal stand, despite Geneseo's 14-6 advantage in shots. Junior Sam Murphy made one save in taking the loss in nets as the Knights fall to 8-7-1 overall and 5-4-0 in SUNYAC. The Knights travel to St. John Fisher on Wednesday for their regular season finale.
