Junior Matt Pebole scored a three-point play with 1:59 left to break a 55-55 tie and Mark Bruce hit a three-pointer with 1:18 to go as the Hobart Statesmen (4-1) held off host Geneseo (3-1) by a score of 66-62 in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic. First year Matt Curry made a three-pointer with 21 ticks left for Geneseo and after a Hobart free throw, senior Nate Cornish made a layup with 14 seconds left to cut the lead to 64-62, but Pebole, who paced Hobart with 13 points, hit a pair of foul shots with two seconds left for the final. Geneseo led 27-25 at the intermission and had their biggest lead at 44-38 with 11:13 to play on a long-range shot by first yaeer Thomas Decker. Hobart responded with seven points in a row for a 45-44 lead on a pair of Pebole free throws. Junior Mike Hoy scored 19 points on 8-13 from the floor to lead Geneseo, Decker added eight points and classmate Connor Fedge netted seven. Hobart's Stefan Thompson and Bruce added 10 points each. Hobart advances to Friday's semifinal at Roberts Wesleyan at 6 p.m., while Geneseo moves to the consolation round on Friday at Hobart at 8 p.m.
