Friday's Contest Summaries

Men's Ice Hockey

First year Zachary Vit scored two goals and two assists and junior Clint Olson added a goal and three helpers to lead #9 Geneseo to a 6-3 win over host Cortland in men's ice hockey tonight as the Ice Knights clinch second place and the #2 seed for next week's SUNYAC tournament. Geneseo will receive a first round bye in the tournament and host a semifinal contest against a first round winner on Saturday, February 26 at 7 p.m. The Ice Knights trailed 3-2 after one period, but erupted for four goals in the second period. Junior Jonathan Redlick added a goal and two assists, senior Michael Forgione netted a shorthanded score in the second period from Colin de Jersey and junior Ryan Bulach completed the scoring from David Arduin and Stefan Decosse. Junior Cory Gershon posted 20 saves to earn the win as the Ice Knights move to 16-6-2 overall and 10-4-1 in SUNYAC. Geneseo completes their regular season at #1 Oswego on Saturday.

Women's Basketball

Sophomore Melissa Graham scored 11 points with six rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Geneseo women's basketball team to a 61-52 victory over host Cortland. Junior Bri Dunton added 11 points and senior Khadija Campbell contributed nine points and eight rebounds. The Blue Knights, who will be the #1 seed for next week's SUNYAC tournament, used a 12-2 run capped by a three-pointer by Dunton to lead 32-20 late in the first half. In the second half, Geneseo led by as many as 13 before Cortland drew within 54-50 with 4:35 to play. The Red Dragons made their first long range shot of the game before missing 20 straight on the way to a 2-24 night from the arc. Geneseo moves to 21-3 overall and 16-1 in SUNYAC and travel to Oswego for the regular season finale on Saturday.

Men's Basketball

The Geneseo men's basketball team were eliminated from playoff contention with a 68-58 loss at host Cortland tonight. Geneseo trailed 32-31 at the intermission and took a 47-45 lead on a three-pointer by junior Ethan Estabrooks with 10:32 remaining. After trading baskets over the next two minutes, Cortland began a 18-3 run to post their largest lead at 65-52 with 32 seconds remaining. Sophomore Ryan Riefenhauser hit 5-12 from the floor and 8-9 from the line for 18 points with 12 rebounds to lead Geneseo. Estabrooks made 3-6 from the arc on his way to 10 points, junior Mike Hoy added 10 points and first year Thomas Decker made 3-6 from long range for nine points. Geneseo falls to 11-13 overall and 5-12 in SUNYAC and completes their season on Saturday at Oswego.

Men's Track & Field

The men's track and field traveled to RIT for a non-scoring meet tonight and posted seven ECAC qualifying performances. Senior Ryan O'Connor and junior Lee Berube finished 1-2 in the 3,000 meters with ECAC times of 8:37.86 and 8:38.33, respectively. Geneseo's Chris Carter and Lee Gabler posted ECAC times in the 800 meters by finishing first in 1:56.69 and second in 1:56.88. Berube boasted his second ECAC time with a third place finish in the 1,000 meters in 2:35.06, junior Nwana Okafor won the long jump in an ECAC distance of 693 meters and Zach Markel, with a toss of 15.19 meters, and Eric Rickman, with a throw of 14.68 meters, claimed ECAC distances in finishing third and fourth in the shot put. In addition, Geneseo placed 1-2-3 in the mile run as Bobby Henchen ran 4:27.37, Tim Chambers crossed in 4:28.47 and Bill Juda ran 4:29.15. Geneseo participates in the SUNYAC Championships at Hobart College on Saturday, February 26.

Women's Track & Field

The women's track and field team participated in a non-scoring meet at RIT tonight and had five winners and four ECAC qualifying performances. Geneseo's 800 meter trio of Cailin Kowalewski, Alyssa Smith and Emily Sullivan each qualified for the ECAC with Kowalewski winning the race in 2:20.91, Smith running second in 2:20.96 and Sullivan racing third in 2:21.93. Geneseo's Diahann Cuevo won the 55 dash in an ECAC time of 7.50 and other winners included Esther Lok in the 5,000 meters (19:25.34), senior Brittany Talani in the shot put (16.02 meters) and senior Maria Barbaglia in the weight throw (13.80 meters). Geneseo posted three other runnerup finishes as Kelly Brunscheen ran a 61.96 in the 400 meters, Mary Aldridge ran a 5:19.30 in the mile run and junior Ashley Jones posted a 10:58.30 in the 3,000 meters. Geneseo competes in the SUNYAC Championships on Saturday, February 26.
