The women's tennis team completed their spring trip with a 6-3 win over Babson (Mass.) in Puerto Rico this morning. The Blue Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion as Julia Passik and Reggie Connelly won at first doubles, 8-3, juniors Monica Vieth and Melissa Baker took a 8-3 win at second doubles and Katie Gayvert and Sarah Shields won an 8-5 victory at third doubles. In singles action, winners for Geneseo included Vieth, Gayvert and sophomore Katie Talbot by scores of 6-4, 6-3 at first singles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles and 6-3, 6-1 at sixth singles, respectively. Geneseo advances to 10-1 on the year and travels to St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, March 30.
UMass-Boston scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 3-2 victory over the Geneseo women's softball team this morning in Clermont, Florida. Geneseo scored twice in the top of the first as KK Schaus reached on an error, stole second and scored on an RBI single by first year Sam Trapasso, who moved to second on the throw home. Sophomore Jess Steubing reached on an infield error which scored Trapasso for the 2-0 lead. In the seventh, senior Janine Montera got the initial two outs on a groundout and a strikeout before UMB began the rally. An RBI single after a two-out double scored the first run and after a walk, an infield error led to the game being tied at two. After a walk loaded the bases, UMB drew another base on balls to claim the win. Montera scattered six hits with three walks and four strikeouts and first year Patricia Callahan went 2-3 for the game. In the second game, Geneseo earned a split on the day with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Western New England College. WNEC scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead, but Geneseo got two runs in the sixth inning to claim the win. Schaus, who finished 2-3, began the rally with a solo homerun. Sophomore Lexi Williams doubled and senior Megan Pogemiller followed with the game-winning RBI double. Williams and Pogemiller each went 2-3 and junior Mary Bostwick picked up the win in the circle after allowing five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Geneseo evens their record at 4-4 and completes the Florida swing with contests against Westfield State and FDU-Florham on Friday.
